The UNLF is estimated to have 5,000 fighters
A prominent separatist leader from the north-east Indian state of Manipur has been arrested in Bangladesh and handed over, senior Indian officials say.
Rajkumar Meghen, who leads the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), was held by Bangladeshi police earlier this month, the officials said.
Mr Meghen, whose alias is Sanayaima, was flown out of Bangladesh recently in an Indian aircraft, the officials said.
The UNLF is the oldest separatist group in India's north-east.
Formed in 1964 to fight for Manipur's liberation from India, the group is estimated to have 5,000 armed fighters. It is the only group which has managed to retain territory in some areas of Manipur's borders with Burma, despite repeated military offensives by the Indian army.
Bangladesh has handed over more than 50 top leaders and activists of Indian separatist groups since a crackdown began in 2009. Many more have fled Bangladesh to evade capture or been caught on the border by Indian guards.
Indian officials said Mr Meghen had moved to the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, from his hideout in Burma's Sagaing Division to line up an arms deal.
His movements were tracked by monitoring his communication with the arms dealers, they said.
Analysts say India may be trying to influence the UNLF leader to start negotiations.
But he has steadfastly refused to talk with India.
Mr Meghen told the BBC six years ago that India must hold a plebiscite in Manipur under the aegis of the UN to ascertain whether Manipuris wanted to stay in India or not.
He was reportedly arrested in Burma in 2000 but released, prompting Indian protests. The Burmese authorities remained silent

Bangladesh should not have done it. These Indians are oppressed people and they deserve to separate from Zionist New Delhi. Bangladesh is forgetting that almost 40 years ago their leader had fled to India

But on person arrested out of 5000, naaah wont make any dent. Keep up Manipuris, get your home, break away from New Dehli. We are with you. Long Live the Manipur struggle

Thanks Bangladesh. They have changed a lot recently. Looks like they have given up on extremism and fundamentalism and focusing on development and moderation. All the best to them. Regarding these separatism, They will die out their natural death. India should bring special projects and invest heavily in these states to bring them into mainstream. I think India should give up Kashmir valley(not whole Jammu and Kashmir) to Pakistan and focus on these states which have no ideological issues.

If india is involved in causing the break up of a country that is ok, but if any one from the indian state wants to be seperate that is extremism. This is democracy and fairness indian style.
It would be wise to give up Kashmir to the Kashmiris' but that will open up a whole pandora's box for india. Don't believe that? Catch 22!

A large can of worm has already been opened in 1971. ZABhutto said after the break of our land ' There is a Bangladesh behind every bush in India'

and its coming in open slowly

Please read the history before you make any comment about Bangladesh.India is not responsible for creation of Bangladesh!!! there was human rights violation in east pakistan and international community urged India to intervene to protect people of Bangladesh ( 95% of them were Muslims).that was the only reason USA( Best friend of Pakistan), China ( another best friend of pakistan) and and all other developed nations stayed away and let India complete the operation.India never wanted to rule east Pakistan or join India which India easily could do that and Bangladesh would have been part of India by now but that was not the case.

Before you blame anyone else , Look into the yourself. Pakistan is responsible for creation of Bangladesh.
