ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) may face a rude shock shortly, as at least 10 of its MNAs have informally pledged to resist Chairman Imran Khan’s decision to resign en bloc from the National Assembly.
The lawmakers have vowed not to follow what they alleged Imran’s dictatorial policies and uphold the party constitution and play a role in preservation of parliamentary system. They are excited about the possibility of Javed Hashmi leading them in their struggle.
Sources privy to the related developments told The News here that the process of formation of a forward bloc in the lower house, got a massive push following Javed Hashmi episode Sunday that has given a new turn to the ongoing show being put by PTI chairman and his supporters.
It may be pointed out here that as per the PTI constitution, an elected ofifce-bearer, let alone an elected president, could not be removed, as Imran had tried to while delivering a speech from his mobile stage a day earlier.
For the removal of an office-bearer, one-third members are required to a file a no-confidence application and then in a month time, he or she can be removed with a two-thirds majority vote of central office-bearers and the provincial presidents and secretary generals of PTI.
The group includes Gulzar Khan, Mussarat Ahmadzeb, Nazir Khan and Qaiser Jamal. The task to rope in more like-minded legislators within PTI has been given to Senator Abbas Khan Afridi, sources pointed out.
In recent few days, the ruling PML-N has also stepped up its contacts with PTI’s lawmakers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, who are also opposed to Imran’s ongoing campaign in Islamabad and have already decided not to toe the party line with reference to the resignation policy.
The jaw-dropping revelations by Hashmi at his news conference here when Imran was giving yet another ultimatum about the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are to be reviewed by a national conference of all PTI leaders, legislators and workers, who were unhappy with the PTI’s Azadi March and sit-in.
Once the closest confidante of Imran and party’s ex-vice president Akbar Sher Babar told this correspondent that they were planning a national convention in Islamabad within few days after Hashmi’s disclosures about Imran had sent shockwaves in the rank and file of not only PTI but also other political circles.
He pointed out that the party’s founding members had pledged that they would never ever become a part of any conspiracy against an elected government. This was one of the focal points of a national conference, Babar had organised here on April 25 this year. PTI was born on this day, in 1996.
