imran khan - spoiler or saviour

Much is being speculated about Imran Khan’s PTI being a potential ‘spoiler’ in the next general elections. The premise is that the PTI will eat into the vote bank of the right-of-centre parties, providing a default-advantage to the PPP and helping it emerge with a majority, even a two-thirds majority. Whatever merit this line of argument may otherwise have, it fails to understand the basic divide along which the votes will be decided during any election: it will pit Imran Khan against a union of all other parties put together.

Pakistan’s traditional political elite – currently represented by the PPP, the PML-N, the PML-Q, other ‘Muslim Leagues’, the MQM, the ANP, the JUI and the likes – have ruled this country in one garb or the other since its independence. At times they have come as the hand-maidens of the military dictators; and at other times they have brandished the weapon of fake democracy. Outfits like the PML-N and the PML-Q wear the former hat while the latter format fits the PPP quite appropriately - a party that enacted a deal with a sitting dictator to facilitate its way into power. The rest of the parties are small and regional to religious aberrations which have imposed their obscurantist and fascist views on a hapless electorate gravely stretched because of economic oppression and fear. These parties, individually and collectively, constitute one side of the divide.

On the other side is Imran Khan - all by himself. He is alone because he does not believe in the practices of the traditional corrupt political elite and is unwilling to compromise any of his principles and beliefs. He is in the field avowedly to bring about a change - a change in the very manner people look upon their leaders and what to expect of them. He has entered the field of politics not because he wanted to fill his coffers and buy properties offshore. Instead, he has already given so much to the people that they cherish profoundly: the pride of winning the only World Cup to-date, the cancer hospital that treats more than 80% of its patients absolutely free and the Namal Education City that is already revolutionising the lives of the inhabitants of some of the most backward areas of the country. Imran is here to create genuine hope for the poorest segments of the society who have languished on the periphery for decades fighting desperately to stay alive. Millions have perished in this fight for morsels grandiosely spared by the bloated ruling elite. An unequal relationship has always existed between the rulers and the ruled in this country. Since it served the interests of the entire traditional political elite, they joined hands to perpetuate it, taking their turns for personal aggrandisement and profit. Imran spells danger for this evil union.

The choice for the people is clear. It is not going to be between various political parties arrayed against one another. It is going to be between all of them together with their appendixes and Imran’s PTI. It will be between the prospect of continued exploitation of the poor by the traditional elite and their liberation and empowerment by the PTI. The choice will be between attempts to continue denuding the poor of their right to education, health care, jobs and progress and an organised and extensive initiative to provide all this as a first priority.

The job is Herculean. The path to salvation is long and arduous, pockmarked with Machiavellian intrigues. The entire state apparatus is aligned against the fast-growing prospect of PTI turning the tables on the plans to defeat it through bogus electoral votes and the pre- and election-day rigging that was so extensively witnessed in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

Imran is bringing no ordinary change. He is riding the crest of a revolution that is being heralded by the young and the daring. They are seeking no less than a new dawn for Pakistan. But Imran and his party face a mammoth challenge. It overarches the need to transform the widely spread raw support into solid votes on the day of the elections. That is what he needs to start focusing on. It requires solid, hard-core strategising that would encompass the unfurling of a fast-paced development programme, transparent selection of candidates whose names are not tarnished, an efficient and functional party machinery geared to providing backup support and a leadership that remains charged to the end.

It also poses a challenge to the people of Pakistan. Now that they have a clear choice - a choice between a corrupt and failed old order and the beginning of a new and potentially inspiring phase - would they be able to exercise their right to vote in an independent and judicious manner, free from the traditional caste and custom pressures? Therein is the key to the prospect of the promised change.

Imran has been an idealist. He has been a dreamer. His power springs from his deep-set ideals. He performed when the pundits had spelled doom. He has given so much to this nation that it savours dearly. This time around, his dream is an independent, sovereign, progressive, egalitarian, enlightened and welfare-oriented Pakistan. A pervasive feeling is gradually taking shape that, with the passage of time, and as Pakistan nears the next elections, the ill-conceived stamp of a ‘spoiler’ will be replaced with that of a saviour.

offcourse Allah is savoir but we inshallah imran khan is the one who will be waseela, off course if Allah is not willing nothing can happen. when we say imran khan will bring a new paksitan ( off course it means with the will of Allah) its just the propganda of filthy status qho parties who is scared to death that people of pakistan are rising and their days are being numbered inshallah. but i liked the heading of a magzine about imran khan. it said one man army against all. i salute to imran khan for his bravery and confidence that he took evrybody on (ppp, nawaz, q, mqm. anp , fazul rehman etc) at the same time , may Allah make him successful

HE is spoiler for PMLN not for PPP, IK dont have any representation in stonghold of sindh and/or southern Punjab...

He is not against the status quo, he is part of it, he has not given a policy yet what will he do different. or he blames that PMLN will adopt any thing he will say for his policy.
If he will change the status quo then he should not be afraid to bring his plan for the public. Because the status quo parties will hate it or stop it not that they will adopt those policies......

When elections are held in a movement, traditional politics takes a back seat. People are transported to polling booths by status quo parties, but they vote for those they think represent CHANGE. PTI is aiming for that kind of electoral revolution. We've seen it happen before at the time of Bhutto so it won't be something unprecedented but things are heading towards that direction, because there is a deep frustration among the general public with all parties (more so with the PPP) and they're looking towards PTI as a hope for change (as is reflected in recent polls).

As for the plan here is IK's latest speech. If you have time, watch it. PTI has also released it's 100-day plan in salient points. But due to the copy cat nature of some of the parties (notably PML-N), it's not released in full.

u r right I dont have time to listen to all bs****. just tell me what time point I should listen. or write the salient points.

Again for change in status quo point...u did not answer. read my post again. let me put this in other words....
If IK will bring change in status quo, then he should not worry to bring his plan because existing parties will stop any thing he propose. If a party notably PMLN can adopt those policies and implement them then

IK is not far from the an existing party. So, not a change in status quo, its same. even he will have rejected candidates from other parties to implement theose policies..

OK, have you come across the 100-day plan released earlier? If you don't have time for this whatever-you-called-it then go through this:

Addressing a press conference to announce the salient features of the 100 day plan prepared by PTI experts. Mr, Imran Khan the PTI Chief stated that unlike other political parties that rely on empty rhetoric, the PTI has prepared a 100 day plan of action with specific steps backed by a detailed cost and revenue plan within a timeframe. The plan would be formally launched in the near future. The plan has been prepared by a team of experts that took over a year.
Imran Khan said the plan has a number of strategic levels of implementation. In the first 100 days, action would be taken on burning issues such as terrorism, corruption unemployment and inflation etc. on a priority basis. The 100 day plan also outlines the medium to long term strategies of the PTI to meet the economic, social, and governance needs of the country.
The PTI Chairman announced that on coming to power, the PTI would withdraw from the war on terror and declare war against corruption.
The PTI Chief said that the PTI counter terror strategy would focus on political approaches with force being the last and least preferred option.
We would declare an end to all military operations and the withdrawal of troops from FATA with the Frontier Corps taking over the responsibility of law and order.
A Grand Peace and Reconciliation Jirga would be constituted to bring harmony through reconciliation.
A commission would be formed to ascertain the human rights violations in FATA & SWAT and establish the nature and scale of compensation to innocent victims and their relatives.
All US bases and intelligence centers would shut down in 3 months.
The visas of all foreign security operatives would be cancelled and they would be repatriated within 7 days.
All drone attacks would be stopped immediately and any breach of our sovereignty would automatically result in blocking of all NATO supplies and an end to all forms of cooperation with the US in its war on terror.
Within the first 100 days, policy framework and direction would include the following steps against corruption:
An independent accountability commission would be formed under a new anti corruption law which would be headed by an individual of impeccable credentials.
Benami accounts and transactions would be banned.
All transactions above a certain ceiling would be legal only if the parties are registered as taxpayers.
Politicians and government officials having foreign bank accounts or properties abroad would be faced to declare their assets and source of income failing which they would banned from holding public office.
Sugar, cement, fertilizer cartels would be dismantled.
On economic issues, he said,
A Pakistan Infrastructure fund would be established to funded by overseas Pakistanis to increase the resource base without conditions.
Indirect taxation would be reduced on fuel and the revenue loss recovered from direct taxation.
Deficit financing to the tune of R. 3,0 billion per day which is the main cause of inflation would be stopped.
Power circular debt would be eliminated.
To put an end to Havala transactions, foreign exchange rules would be amended.
The PTI Chief said that austerity measures would be put in place. All special perks and privileges of the President, PM, Ministers, and Parliamentarians would be abolished. On employment generation, he said that major physical infrastructure projects would be initiated to generate employment.
The PTI Chairman stated the measures proposed would increase revenue generation would be double in 5 years by measures to increase and broaden the tax and bring the rich into the tax net.
The youth of the country would be involved massively in labor and technology intensive projects.
Judicial and police reforms would be instituted to ensure the rule of law. All Judges of the higher courts would be appointed through a Judicial Commission without any involvement of the parliamentarians. All government appointments would be made through restructured public service commissions.
Nonresident Pakistanis would be actively involved by promoting their economic and technical support in the overall economic restructuring in Pakistan. Special tax incentives would be announced for overseas Pakistanis to facilitate their investment in the country.
An education emergency would be declared. The allocations for education would be increased at the rate of 2 percent annually. A process of uniform core curriculum would be initiated.
A National energy Authority shall be established under the Prime Minister. By better management, control of theft and wastage, and refurbishing of power plants a 50% improvement in efficiency can be attained within the first of the PTI government year in the power sector.

And as for your question, PML-N has a habit of copying things from PTI. And it's not like they will implement anything put forward by PTI, but only use it during the election campaign to fool people, as they've been doing before. PTI doesn't want that to happen. But it'll come out soon, don't worry.

Some things PTI does want them to copy and that is the point about declaration of assets and bringing a law to put an end to Benami transactions. But that would be a difficult point to copy. However, we do see Shahbaz Sharif making claims of bringing his assets to Pakistan.
