Imran Khan Offers to Mediate to Restore Peace in Country
Islamabad (December 9, 2009)
The PTI Chairman Imran Khan has offered to mediate to bring peace in the country. He made the offer at a press conference at the partys Central Secretariat in Islamabad on Wednesday. He expressed his optimism that given the mandate by the government he was willing to travel to the tribal areas and elsewhere to negotiate peace which would be under the ambit of the 1973 Constitution. Now that the US and the Karzai regime had asked for dialogue with the Taliban it is time for Pakistan to stop relying solely on military solutions. He said his mediation offer has only one condition that the government would not undermine his peace efforts under US pressure. He said once the peace agreement is reached it could be presented before the Parliament for ratification.
There are 5 types of militants operating under the garb of the Taliban:
Foreign Militants
Foreign backed militants
Criminal Elements involved in abduction and robbery this number is increasing due to the massive unemployment and poverty in the frontier and FATA regions.
The Jihadi groups
Tribal People involved in militancy due to Pashtun solidarity with the Afghan nation or reacting to military operations by the Pak army in the tribal areas under the behest of the US Do More Policy.
The objective the dialogue should be to isolate the terrorists from the tribal majority.
The PTI Chairman said that he is making the mediation offer as the present security situation is unacceptable and if allowed to continue it would ruin our country. Our internal security, our economy, our federation, even our survival is under threat due to our involvement in someone elses war, Therefore, it is time for us to wake up and resolve to save Pakistan.
To support his argument of the precarious situation facing the country, Imran Khan shared the key findings of a survey of the youth of Pakistan under the age of 30 which account for about 75 percent of the population of the country. The survey was conducted by the British Council. The key findings of the survey indicate:
72 percent of Pakistanis feel that their economic situation has got worse in the past year.
Only 15 percent believe the country is heading in the right direction.
Only one in ten expect an improvement in the near future.
The PTI Chairman stated that without peace and security, there can be no economic turnaround. It is clear that the government has no comprehensive strategy to deal with the problem of extremism and terrorism. The majority of the people of Pakistan are helpless victims. According to the US State Department figures:
The number of terrorist attacks around the world fell by 18% last year but rose dramatically in Pakistan.
Attacks in Pakistan more than doubled between 2007 and 2008 to about 1,800 and have quadrupled since 2006.
The PTI Chairman stated that recent reports in the western press about the US decision to expand covert military operations inside Pakistan including targeting Quetta and other parts of Balochistan is alarming as will lead to destabilization. Also the government should immediately cancel the visas of all foreign security personnel (Black water, Dyncorp etc.) as they are fueling extremism. He said the solution to the growing internal and external security threats facing the country require a major policy reassessment leading to a change in our policy in the war on terror. He urged upon the government to call an APC to discuss the new threats confronting our country.
