Imran announces Rs 1 billion for emergency services at KP hospitals
PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Wednesday announced Rs 1 billion special initiative package for free emergency services at all the public sector hospitals in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and pledged to make the health sector in the province a model for the rest of the country.
He was speaking at a function at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH). The event started two hours late due to his delayed arrival. KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, Health Minister Shaukat Yousafzai and LRH Chief Executive Prof Dr Arshad Javaid also spoke on the occasion. Imran Khan pledged to bring revolutionary changes in the health, education and local government systems of the province.
“We are still one month behind our deadline that we had set for ourselves regarding bringing a visible change in governance of the province. The entire country is looking towards KP, which we would make a role model for others,” he said.
After Shaukat Yousafzai held the previous government responsible for the poor healthcare system, Imran Khan addressed him and said: “Shaukat, I will not accept this excuse after three months.” The remark led to applause by the audience in the jam-packed hall.
Imran said raising hospital structures was not an issue as the prime responsibility of the government was to ensure free health services for the patients.Comparing his state-of-the-art Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, where 70 percent patients are given free cancer treatment with the poorly-equipped state-run hospitals, the PTI leader said they had been spending Rs3 billion only on free cancer treatment to the poor patients.
He said it was difficult to understand how the LRH administration was providing services with Rs 1.6 billion annual budget in a hospital where 2,000 patients daily visit the OPD.
“This is the largest figure of patients in any OPD in the world. We will improve standard of the hospitals and introduce a different system here,” Imran said, adding that he was happy as there were no charges of corruption against any of the PTI ministers.
Chief Minister Pervez Khattak claimed that the change had come before adding that “You will soon see changes in public institutions such as hospitals, police stations and schools.”
He said the police would have to change their attitude with the people. “The system of looters and corrupt will soon come to an end. I have told all government officials that I need 100 percent results,” the chief minister said.
Shaukat Yousafzai said the public sector hospitals from Kohistan to Dera Ismail Khan had collapsed due to corrupt practices of the previous governments.
He said the government had renewed contracts of 250 doctors and recruited 200 others to overcome shortages in the hospitals. He said they would soon separate management from the teaching cadre to help improve performance of the hospitals.
The minister said the government had banned selling drugs in private medical stores without licence. Also, he said they were working on a law to curb reuse of syringes.
Prof Dr Arshad Javaid said the LRH had been providing non-stop services to patients since 1924. He said the LRH was handling all traumas, victims of bomb blasts, suicide attacks and drone strikes. He hoped the special funds would enable them to improve services and patient care.
With the Rs 1 billion special funds, the hospitals are required to provide free health services to all the patients in emergency, including medicines, lab and investigation, X-ray, ultrasound, CCU, ICU, labour room, etc.
The Lady Reading Hospital, Khyber Teaching Hospital and Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar and Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad would get Rs50 million for the emergency services.
The teaching hospitals in Mardan, Swat, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu would be provided Rs40 million for provision of free services to the patients. The other district headquarters hospitals would receive Rs30 million.
