But, what does my attire have to do with my work?I was baffled. PHOTO: REUTERS/FILE

As I stood outside the glass door, gathering my confidence I took a deep breath. This has got to be it, I thought. I prayed one last time before entering the world I wanted to be a part of.I was a recent advertising graduate, a position holder, the favourite of almost all my teachers. I was about to enter the office of a renowned advertising agency to interview for a copywriting position. This was where I had always seen myself when I closed my eyes. I was ready to give it my best.I stepped inside and took in the surroundings. Done up in white and gold, the extravagant lobby enticed me. I walked to the reception, feeling watched, feeling judged. The girl on the counter seemed to come out from a fashion magazine, her skin was smooth and perfect, her nails polished. I could not help but notice that the girl had hazel eyes and her eye lids were dark green and yellow.Yes? What do you want?I am here for the interview.I saw a flicker of amusement in those enchanting hazel eyes. Ok, have a seat please. I sat on the faux leather couch and looked at the small fountain in the lobby and the lights dancing with the water. Employees moved around, silent and efficient. Miss Tooba? I heard my name being called.I was led to the conference room. Please wait, Mr Shariq* will be here in a moment, my guide informed me and left the room. I looked around at the spotless glass table, black chairs that complemented the white interior and a flat screen television that was installed at the far end of the room. I smiled to myself, clearly impressed.I heard the door open and turned to look around. A middle aged man in a gray striped suit, white shirt and a pink tie entered the room. This must be Mr Shariq, I thought. I sensed a hesitation in his demeanour, his pace slowing for a second.Hello, Tooba, he said, seemingly overcoming his hesitation.Hello, I replied, fervently wishing for easy questions, like all candidates. He asked me about myself. My voice unsteady for a second, I regained my confidence and answered properly. I gave the right answers to all his questions, ranging from my subject to my personality. He gave me a test and I performed well. I felt sure that I would get the job.Okay, Tooba, one last question, suddenly his tone changed.I sat a little straighter, puzzled by the apprehension in his tone.Yes? Suddenly, I did not feel so sure of myself.Do you really think you can work like this here? His objection was to my attire. I was wearing a pink hijab with a moss green gown, covered head to toe.Well yes, why not? I replied.I am sorry Tooba, but you might not be able to adjust here. It would have been a pleasure to have a person of your caliber here, but he stopped in the mid sentence, his implication clear. But, what does my attire have to do with my work?I was baffled.Other people might not be comfortable with you around, he said with certainty.I was speechless.I had never heard anything of this kind before. I had studied at a reputable, institution. I have lots of friends, and no one has ever felt uncomfortable around me, why would this attitude suddenly change with me stepping into the professional world? It was a pleasure meeting you Tooba, his words indicated the end of the interview. I stood up, feeling dejected, a tear in my eye. This was absurd. Sixteen years of hard work, my academic standing, everything seemed to go down the drain. Was it just appearance that mattered? All my achievements, intellect, confidence could not land me my dream job.I felt cheated, my years of efforts wasted for all the wrong reasons. I was forced to let go of my dream by professionals who claimed to provide equal employment opportunities but could not shun their discrimination towards an attire that does them no harm.Wheres the justice?

Yar it is just a blind topic....

Not good to discuss.

When these girls are in Pakistan or in any Islamic country , they compete in western dress.

When they are in Europe or US , they start getting Hijab....

I know lots of people who does like that.... It is strange for me.

Every one could judge that who is fake and who is real Hijab wearer ...

And real people are always get respect.

This happened here is Islamic Republic of Pakistan not is Europe or America, we speak a lot about the Discrimination happening with Muslim and Pakistanis in west, but see we are doing the same thing here. The guy who did interview had no issue except with her hijab. and what a ridiculous excuse he made that the people working around won't feel comfortable. I mean, why is anyone concerned if a girl wear a hijab on work place? Next time someone will deman a complete ban on hijab like france will we too do that?

God, very tragic, why on earth these so called broad minded people turn out to be so narrow minded.

I have been hearing few such incidents where the girl being rejected on basis of wearing hijab.

I fail to understand why ?

when all of us are muslims then why ?

what harm in it, its simply a dress, part of dress thats it.

shame , really shame on all such people who reject talented women just coz of hijab.

The interviewer was a complete jerk. She looks like she has good personality from the picture.

No wonder the economy of Pakistan is tanking when you don't employ people based on merit. He could have questioned her to establish weather she has the ability to get along with other people but he chose to determine on the basses on how her head was covered . I have seen people dressed liberally but can't get along with anyone.

I hire only people who I believe can make my company successful and make money for me this is the only criteria.

Its not strange bcuz in pakistani society people are slaves of social net work ,they dont follow Islam bcuz they live in a hypocrate society where ISlam is used for a label and for religious practices like prayer, fasting ,marrages and janazas .Islam is not practiced in our daily lives but when we come out from that system in a kafir non believing society we got afraid of being lost ,this really gives us true awearness of Islam and make us practicing muslim

ur statment seems to contradict reality.

Reality says - in Pakistan the "Hijabers" and the "Non-Hijabers" are two different categories. The lot that follows western attire to roam the streets, markets, Univ and work places do not GET a sudden change of heart when they go abroad. When they are comfortable dressing like that in Pakistan, why would they be uncomfortable in the "Gora" land ? The land where a man DOES not oogle a woman if she's dressed decent enough.

Those girls that wear Hijabs in Pakistan continue with their Hijabs in foreign countries, for them thats their second skin.

Ur example could be just ONE girl in the whole population, cannot be more.

No where in the article the place is mentioned so how you concluded that it is pakistan? It is difficult to believe that a woman can be refused a job in pakistan for wearing hijab, but then corporate world has its own set of rules.....

Why there is Discrimination in our Country at every stage,
Well as we all know this world is mortal & one day we have to left,
there are few days of difficulty to survive in this world but
after that u will get reward.
Patience is the one which lead u to success so wait for the time.

This happened in our country! Islamic republic of Pakistan! On one end we have these people blowing up half the country in the name of Islam and on the other people like this interviewer. Extremists both of them.

Im sure if this girl had told certain organisations and people, protests could have been held against this interviewer, not because of this girl but so that this interviewer never treats another girl this way

If it had happened she must have mentioned the country, so I believe chances are it happened in Pakistan. you can expect such things from people who want to prove them liberal (so called) and yup corporate culture has its own rule but then they must have mentioned it in their advertisement that men who have beard or women who wear hijab don't apply for this job so people should not waste their time and energies.
