Very interesting insight into Army psychology,So basic underlying assumption is what ever side America is the righteous side.
Because JI is actually the one being consistent. If soviet invasion into Afghanistan was Jehad worthy then how come an American invasion is not?
Either Army disowns the former and apologises for committing Pakistan to the Afghan Jehad enterprise.
Cant have it both ways.
Or it should strip away any Islamic imagery,pretension and project the already existent secularism of the higher ranks into its rank & file. Using religious motivations may increase moral but it also puts contraints on decision making.
Because there is always risk of blow-back if the religious narrative is lost.
Another thing worth noticing is the sad trend due to Sifarshi appointments.
Now Army has become a Khandani pesha.
Army is a lucrative field for advancement of low income people who dont have great grades.
The fact that its now restricted to certain families in certain areas is not good for the country neither the institution.
And this is not just about getting in. Now advancement up the ranks is also based on family connections. Which is largely responsible for the poor quality upper leadership Army seems to be producing in abundance.
This is a natural holdover from "Martial Race" theories in colonial era (based on areas that supplied troops to crush 1857 mutiny)but has become much worse now.
One of the reason E.Pakistan ppl saw the Army as a foreign occupation force.
Same is true now in FATA & Bolochistan, even KPK to be frank. Not healthy in the long run.
If Quota were valid in CSP case, I think one for Army should also be considered. Infact hire more ppl from disadvantaged areas where other professional opportunities are limited.
Personally I think a better solution is if Pakistan should think seriously about instituting a compulsary national draft (with a skeleton officer corp along with specialised units) so this insular ever expanding cantonementistan is dismantled.
