Aftermath of the Bhawalnagar Incidents/Intelligence Report by 786 Intelligence Battalion:

Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs), and soldiers are pleased with the successful operation against the Punjab Police. Their satisfaction was evident during gatherings at Eid like on Bara Khana.

However, other Corps Commanders and Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) are concerned about the strained relations between the army and the police following the incident.

Both the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) expressed dissatisfaction with the growing divide between them and the police, as they relied on the Punjab Police for almost all harassment operations.

Senior police officials are troubled by the brazen attack by the army, leading to decreased morale and some resignations within their ranks.

The Adjutant General (AG) and Director General of Personnel Security and Provost Martial (DG PS&PM) at GHQ hold a different perspective, advocating for accountability and proper investigation, including Corps Commander Saqib's role. While the operation was sanctioned by Saqib, after consulting with COAS Asim Munir to boost troop morale, they expressed concerns over its negative portrayal on social and international media.

AG and DG PS&PM argue that the police were within their rights to apprehend the family members of the SSG soldier, emphasizing the wide arrest powers granted to them.

Reports suggest that the SSG NCO involved may have been associated with Asim Munir's security group at GHQ or deployed at the SSG company in Bhawalnagar. However, the assault was confirmed to be led by the SSG alongside infantry troops of the 31 Corps.

An inquiry into the incident has been initiated by the AG, with the Commanding Officer of the SIB, a Colonel, leading the investigation.

There is a perceived disparity within the army regarding responses to similar police operations, particularly between KPK and Punjab. They believe that such harsh actions against police at KPK in similar circumstances have not been taken.

AG aims to replace Saqib as Corps Commander in Bahawalpur to further his own agenda.

Allegations against the SSG NCO's involvement in criminal activities have surfaced, leading to doubts about the integrity of both army and SSG personnel.

Asim Munir's approval of the operation is seen as a measure to regain control over his SSG security group, which he perceived as a potential threat.

Following AG's recommendation, the SSG NCO has been temporarily reassigned to the PA Directorate due to concerns about inciting further violence.

AG believes that the replacement of Comd SSG Maj Gen Adil Rehmani is necessary due to his leadership style, which has allegedly led to misconduct among SSG personnel.

The incident has drawn sarcastic remarks from within the army, highlighting perceived inconsistencies in disciplinary actions taken against regular officers and SSG personnel, who regularly display criminal conduct, which is owed to their extrajudicial actions during internal security-IS operations.

Adil Raja.
