Flood victims refuse to leave for damaged houses
PESHAWAR: Flood affectees staying in government schools have refused to leave for their homes as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has set September 20 deadline for their return. Around 16,500 displaced families were staying at 243 schools in Peshawar after being evacuated from Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda districts. After the district administration ordered them to leave and stopped food provision, some 11,500 families returned to their damaged houses. The remaining displaced people were staying in 85 schools and some 5,000 are still staying in schools as their houses were completely destroyed. The provincial government had extended summer vacations of government schools, scheduled to reopen on September 1, till September 20 so that the affectees could return to their homes. The affected families staying in schools, however, have rejected the governments orders to leave demanding the government first set up shelter homes and provide enough relief to them before their return. Our houses are not in livable condition. We will not leave the schools until the government sets up tent villages for us, said flood affected Mohammad Jabbar, a resident of Taru Jaba in Nowshera district currently staying at Government Higher Secondary School No 1. Inamullah, also a resident of the same area and staying in the same school, said that the government should first provide enough relief and release compensation for reconstruction of their houses before their return. Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain has reportedly said that the government wants return of the flood affectees so that they could register their destroyed houses with the government and start reconstruction work. The minister said that the govt has started release of Rs 20,000 per affected family for reconstruction of their houses. akhtar amin
