I dont buy that either, but then also I don't try to twist and turn it into something that fits to my understanding. First I try to research and learn that maybe its my understanding that limited and keeping me from understanding it properly.I know that it's not in the surah, but the reference was given to historical Abraha, and that tells us elephants were in the desert. That's why I don't buy the traditionalists' interpretations of Surah Al Fil.
To me ( with my current state of limited understanding maybe Allah will increase my understanding in the future and I will understand it better ) it is demonstrating the power of Allah and how he has control over everything and can use any of his creations in anyway he pleases. Also it alludes to some event that was well know at the time as the opening verse says
Have you not considered, how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?
Also what everyone seems to miss is that the word is Feel, single elephant, not elephants or an army of elephants. And very few have actually translated this correctly like the one I have posted from Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran.
Its companions of the فِيل (fīl) i,e one elephant it were more it would be فِيَلَة (fiyalah)
