This is what I tweeted this morning after watching Imran Khan's speech at Davos in the Desert:

Disappointed in #ImranKhan's #Pakistan pitch at #DavosInTheDesert. #Saudis are big investors in #SiliconValley and #ImranKhan failed to mention Pakistan's #tech potential. It took an #Indian questioner in the audience to point to #Pakistan's #IT potential

Pakistan's information technology exports have bucked the nation's declining exports trend with double digit growth to reach $1,065 million in fiscal year 2018, according to the State Bank of Pakistan. It is generally believed that Pakistan's central bank underestimates technology exports. Some have argued that the actual IT exports were closer to $5 billion in fiscal 2018. Some of the differences can be attributed to the fact that the State Bank IT exports data does not include various non-IT sectors such as financial services, automobiles, and health care.

Pakistan IT exports surged 13.4% to $1.06 billion in fiscal year 2018 from $939 million in fiscal year 2017. The growth was even more robust in the prior year with IT exports rising 19.1% from $789 million in fiscal 2016 to reach $939 million in fiscal year 2017.

About $320 million of IT exports revenue in fiscal 2018 came from software exports while the rest was made up of services such as consulting, telecom and call centers.

Freelancers in Pakistan are benefiting from the growing access to broadband connections which are now being used by over 50 million Pakistanis across the country. Pakistan is ranked 4th in the world by the freelancing industry report. The country has rapidly increasing human capital of technologists.

Growth in IT exports is a good sign for Pakistan's export diversification beyond commodities such as textiles and food. In addition, air forces of about a dozen developing nations are buying and deploying Pakistani made aircrafts. The reasons for their choice of Pakistan manufactured airplanes range from lower cost to ease of acquisition, maintenance and training.

Stop twisting the facts, KHAN did mention the truth that no Pakistani Govt paid any attention to IT market. He added that we are working to establish policies towards IT, if you have followed the news then last week Finance Minister mentioned that only business which can flourish in Islamabad and other cities is the IT business.

i belong to this field and I agree with you. But I think IK mentioned big plans for IT as part of his overall agenda. But then he made the MQM guy the minister... so hope he realizes this... this one industry can be a game changer for Pak single handedly. I wish he had a better team then what he has now.

I kinda agree somehow as could be highlighted more, but also will be nice if someone can start representing Pakistan on much dedicated IT meetings like World Hosting Days, or big summits, etc.

A bit side topic as may relate or not, but inside Pakistan companies should start using licensed Software products because, many big IT companies can take the step but they want licenses and certificates like ISO registrations. Especially Telecom industry depends on the certificates before making any financial deal.

Will MQMP Bhatta khor IT minister will be able to bring back PAYPAL to Pakistan? That shows the seriousness of PTI govt in promoting IT business. The easy access to the payment is the key in IT business.

pakistani it sector is mostly based on outsourcing. There is hardly any it company in pakistan doing over USD one billion in revenue.

Do you want saudi arabia to start buying out pakistani software houses?

Sir try to understand, the event was not to highlight investment opportunities and get investment in Pakistan but Saudi organised it for themself, we were there to get a bail out package, which we Alhamdulillah got and the resul is 100%.

I think people do not understand the perspective, the event was for KSA. Pakistan was there to get their money for economical crisis, which IK cashed efficiently. Also IK gave the correct perception that is realistic and ground facts. Business people already know the state of Pakistan so showing golden dreams was not the point there. But this will have good positive impact in future.
