Ansar asks JUI-F to prove its allegation against him
Friday, November 14, 2008
We are facing media trial, say Senator Khalid Soomro in Geos Capital Talk programme
RAWALPINDI: Ansar Abbasi, editor investigation of The News, has asked the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) to produce before a court proof of an allegation by one of its leaders wherein he was dubbed as agent of Jewish lobby.
On the other hand, Senator Dr Khalid Mahmood Soomro of the JUI-F has claimed that media trial of his party leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman is going on because he had spoken against the United States in the in-camera session of Parliament.
Participating in a debate in Capital Talk programme of Geo News, the JUI-F senator expressed his ignorance about allegations of Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri and Maulana Abdul Wasey and said everything published in newspapers is not true. Regretting, what he called media trial of his party, Dr Soomro said they feel that some journalists have been hired by some quarters for propaganda against his party.
Saying that his party is going to a court of law against the journalists who, according to him, spitted venom against his party leadership and indulged in their character assassination, he invited Ansar Abbasi to move the court. He said that Ansar Abbasi could not prove anything against Maulana Fazlur Rehman till the Day of Judgement.
Dr Khalid Soomro said that they support the freedom of expression and have always talked about it, joined journalists during demonstrations and always supported them considering it their duty but there should be a limit. He said that journalists could not be allowed to malign others without fear of any accountability.
Admitting that incorrect things are also published in newspapers, Ansar Abbasi said that journalists too could commit a mistake and he would not hesitate from apologising even to a peon if he committed any mistake but would not bow to any pressure. He said it does not matter to him as to what the JUI-F leaders dub him because he is answerable to Almighty Allah. He said that he adopted the profession as a mission, and he does not need a certificate about his affection with the religion from anybody. He also produced documentary proof of the allotment of 1,200 kanals of military land to close associates of Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
Views of some journalists condemning statement of a JUI-F leader, dubbing Ansar Abbasi as agent of Jewish lobby were also included in the programme. Awami National Party Secretary Information Zahid Khan also participated in the debate. Ansar Abbasi and Dr Soomro also exchanged some harsh words during the debate.
Ansar Abbasi insisted that the JUI-F should be asked as to why GHO allotted such huge chunk of land to its members. He said that if Maulana Fazlur Rehman wants to do politics, he should not mingle it with Islam and respond to every question. He said that some associates of the Maulana were also allotted during the previous regime, but the allotment was cancelled when the bureaucracy bitterly opposed it. He said that he did not prepare record while sitting at home, but the documents were on the record of the Revenue Department. He said that whether the JUI-F chief refuted it when two leaders of his party accused him of being Jewish agent.
Pointing out that the JUI-F was supporter of former President Pervez Musharraf, Ansar Abbasi asked the JUI-F leaders to prove in a court of law that he is an agent of the Jewish lobby.
Dr Soomro contended that Maulana Fazlur Rehman did not dub Ansar Abbasi as agent of Jews. He said that if the land was allotted in 2004, why did Ansar Abbasi show patience for four years. Quoting Asfandyar Wali Khan as having said that the JUI-F got land for supporting the 17th amendment, the JUI-F senator said they are taking lead and they have a right to ask as to what did Asfandyar get for supporting Musharrafs referendum? He said that provincial governments allot land in all province and thousands of people have got land. He vowed that they would combat all the conspiracies and prove in courts that reports against the JUI-F are incorrect.
Responding to Dr Khalid Soomro, Zahid Khan said that Asfandyar had not accused JUI-F of getting lands rather he (Zahid Khan) had issued a statement to this effect. He said that nobody should be emotional. He said that Ansar Abbasi has written against them and the Pakistan Peoples Party as well. He said that they had supported Musharrafs referendum because of the seven-point agenda that was given by him when he had come into power. He said when they adjudged that Musharraf was telling lies, they opposed him in the election and he had lost in the NWFP. He said that the JUI-F was sitting with the PML-Q in the Balochistan government and whether the PML-Q was not created by Pervez Musharraf? He said that on the one hand they (JUI-F) were sitting in Musharrafs government while, on the other hand, they were talking of opposing him.
Dr Khalid Soomro pointed out that Ansar Abbasi first wrote against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and showed the way to Pervez Musharraf but when Musharraf deposed him, he started supporting Chief Justice Chaudhry.
To this, Ansar Abbasi said that he had written against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry one year before his suspension when nobody dared to write against him, but when he was suspended on March 9, he opposed the move of Pervez Musharraf and stated in the same programme of Geo News that it was an attack on the judiciary. He said that he has no personal enmity with anybody, but it is his basic responsibility to write against a powerful person, a ruler or anybody else holding a high office when he did anything wrong.
When the host (Hamid Mir) asked as to how journalists should be held accountable, Ansar Abbasi said the accountability process is very simple. He said they talk of the rule of law and when there is rule of law, anybody, whether he is a journalist, general, judge or a politician belonging to any party, should be held accountable. He said there is no friendship in journalism. He said had he any enmity with Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, he would not have supported him after March 9, but a journalist has always to talk of principles. He said when any party done a wrong, he would say it did wrong, but if it done anything good, he would say it good.[/quote]
