The dissatisfaction expressed by Chairman All Parties Hurriyet Conference Syed Ali
Geelani and Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Yaseen Malik over the
indifference of Pakistani rulers to the Kashmir cause is a matter of grave concern for the
people of Kashmir and Pakistan.
In a telephonic interview with Nawa-i-Waqt both leaders stated with a deep sense of
frustration that Kashmir did not seem any longer to be an issue for Pakistani leadership.
They were voicing the sentiments of Kashmiris who feel betrayed by being left in the
lurch. There is no disputing Mr Geelanis statement that our leaders are impressed by
the Indians and have adopted an approach of currying favour with them by promoting
bilateral trade and developing relations with India in other fields, neglecting their
traditional obligation of according Kashmiris moral and diplomatic support. The
criticism is quite apt when seen against the backdrop of Islamabads submissive
posturing towards the Indian government, as Pakistan ignores the core issue of Kashmir
and gives approval for the construction of dams on the rivers whose waters are allocated
to us under the Indus Waters Treaty. It was nothing less than a shock to hear Federal
Minister for Water and Power Naveed Qamar coolly saying in the National Assembly
that India was working on only those hydro-projects for which Islamabad had given its
consent. A bigger shock was that these projects are 41 in number. In the same tone of
rank apathy and finality, he stated that the decision announced on Baglihar Dam was
not in favour of Pakistan. The Indian designs are outrageous but what is unbearably
deplorable is the unconcerned attitude of the PPP-led set-up. Water theft, if unchecked,
would render Pakistan a barren tract of land.
Whatever the present leaderships attitude to Kashmir and water issues, there is genuine
fear of war breaking out between these nuclear countries any time in the future unless
they are resolved in an equitable manner.
