ISLAMABAD - ASMA GHANI - Over 130 Pakistani and Chinese companies and universities gathered at Pak-China Business Forum to bring academic and industrial stakeholders together and for closer links between Pakistani and Chinese entrepreneurs and businessmen.

The four-day Pak-China Business Forum started at Pak-China Friendship Center Islamabad Saturday. The event has been jointly organised by COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) and Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ICCI).

Major Chinese and Pakistani companies, small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurs, universities, and research & development organisations have been participating in the forum activities. One of the main features of the event is an exhibition of products by 100 local and 30 Chinese companies and universities.

As the country has been facing energy crises, many stalls by the local and Chinese companies have displayed equipments and production lines based on alternate energies and home appliance that consume solar energy. A representative of Chongqing Biogas New Energy, a Chinese company, at his stall informed that in all the Chinese villages biogas energy is used instead of electricity and the government provides free of cost biogas generating equipments to the villagers. Such equipments can be used successfully in villages that have no electricity or even in the cities that face power outages, he added.

One of the students of CIIT, Ammar, who had displayed his project, said such forums could help those students to establish links with the industry who otherwise have no links and references. I have completed my BS in Electrical Engineering over a month ago and looking for a job. But there are hardly any opportunities in research and development in Pakistan. But at least we can hope that we would get access to foreign companies through such forums.

Many women and men who have no outlets in the markets have also exhibited their various crafts at the exhibition through the platform of ICCI.

Besides, exhibitions and stalls, workshops, discussions and sideline meetings with industrialists, academicians and Pakistani business community have been planned for the promotion of business activity among the two countries. Many Chinese companies have been participating to promote Pak- China Business liaison.

The main themes of the forum are renewable energy technologies, setting up joint Pak-China production facilities for laptops and other electronics equipment, information & communication technologies, water conservation, purification & sanitation, biomedical materials and general category.

Pak-China Business forum was inaugurated by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Special Secretary Noor Muhammad Jadmani. President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Zafar Bakhtawri, Chairman of CongSong Zia Main, Pro-Rector Dr. Harron Rasheed, Executive Director General Board of Investment Imran Cheema, Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, teaching faculty, students and administrative staff members of CIIT were also present on the occasion.

While addressing the gathering, Li Zhou from China proposed many business programs of mutual interest during his speech. Promoting and supporting greater efforts to develop renewable sources of energy and implement policies at the national and international level is of vital importance, he added.

Noor Muhammad Jadmani said promoting and facilitating economic progress of developing countries through transfer of technology and diffusion of knowledge is very important especially for the South Asian region.

Devising national strategies for the human resource development and promotion of Science and Technology are also essential, he added.

Rector CIIT Dr S M Junaid Zaidi said the university has introduced an academia driven model of business cooperation by conducting Pak-China Business Forum to promote academia-industry collaboration in business and economic sector for mutual benefit of both the countries.

He announced the holding of this forum on annual basis in the last week of March every year. He proposed establishment of a Technology Park with the mutual coordination of ICCI and CIIT to provide a platform to Chinese and Pakistani Business community for the promotion of mutual trade activates and industry and academic collaboration.
