I cannot say for other religion but Islam does not stop us from doing research on the universe, in fact Allah S.W.T invites us in almost every surah of the glorious Quran to ponder on His creation and know His power.
Cosmology is my favorite subject, they say the visible universe is 93 billions light years across and the number of starts in the sky is more than the number of sand particles on all beaches of planet earth and most of these stars are millions time bigger than planet earth, The actual universe may be much bigger than the visible universe because the speed of expansion of space is more than the speed of light, just think about it for 13 billions years this universe has been expanding with a speed more than the speed of light. Now this visible and invisible universe with all its billions of galaxies, dark matter, dark energy, black holes, neutron stars, super novas, trillions and trillions of stars and planets is only the first heaven, above which are six more heavens which are much more bigger than the first heaven and all these heavens ans earth put together is like a ring in a dessert as compared to the kursi of its Creator S.W.T, lofty is Him. He S.W.T created every single atom every string, known and unknown particle and He S.W.T is in full control of every single smallest and largest creation
And remember all your past, present and future civilizations, science and technology, telescopes, scientists, philosophers, all their tools and techniques, all equipment all those big names are there in that small blue dot which you see on the right side below the discs of Saturn that is our home, our knowledge, efforts of billions of human over thousand of years and all their glories which is not more than a dust particle
