ISLAMABAD: BlackBerry will not operate in Pakistan after Nov 30, Chief Operating Officer Marty Beard confirmed in a statement posted to the smartphone makers' website.

Beard says the company will exit the market because "remaining in Pakistan would have meant forfeiting our commitment to protect our users privacy".

The COO says: "In July, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority notified the countrys mobile phone operators that BlackBerrys BES servers would no longer be allowed to operate in the country starting in December 'for security reasons'."

"Pakistans demand for open access to monitor a significant swath of our customers communications within its borders left us no choice but to exit the country entirely," Beard added.

BlackBerry exiting Pakistan over government's user data demand

BlackBerry has announced that it will stop all its operations in Pakistan, and will exit the market. In a blog post related to the matter, the company revealed that back in July this year, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority sent out notifications to the country’s mobile phone operators stating that BlackBerry's BES servers won't be allowed to operate in the country starting December due to "security reasons".

While there's no clarity on what those "security reasons" are, BlackBerry says the government there wanted unrestricted access to their customers’ data, which the company refused, and that's the reason it has received shutdown order from the authorities.

"The truth is that the Pakistani government wanted the ability to monitor all BlackBerry Enterprise Service traffic in the country, including every BES e-mail and BES BBM message," the company said. "But BlackBerry will not comply with that sort of directive."

Although the government's order was only related to BlackBerry's BES servers, the company has decided to exit the market altogether. "Pakistan’s demand for open access to monitor a significant swath of our customers’ communications within its borders left us no choice but to exit the country entirely," the company explained.

Initially, the order required the company to shut the operations in the country starting November 30, but after Blackberry announced the news on its blog, the date has been extended to December 30, the company says.

Communication networks are jugular vein of a nation. Busharaf the Traitor comprised it to international spy agencies. Leave Black Berry aside, the worst thing is that institutions like PTCL are compromised through the front companies. It is a great news that Black Berry is running.

It's not great news. Get some perspective. This means the people of Pakistan have handed over enormous power to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to spy on them. You might enjoy the PTA snooping on you, I don't. We Pakistanis have given up our rights to Online privacy.. Just like we have handed our right to practice our religion freely as well. Pakistanis have this mummy daddy complex.. Where they think the State of Pakistan is their abba huzoor. Forget about foreign compromises, people like you have yourself handed over your rights to corporations and state.

What Blackberry did was the right thing to do. Protect your customers from the same state that is hell bent into prying it's own citizen's privacy by Law. I wish more companies in Pakistan took their customer's privacy more seriously.

It is better to vest power in own agencies rather than the exploiting enemies. Do U think American & Israeli intl. agencies doesn't have access to Black Berry or on any other Tel Operators data?

You can fight on legality of foreign agencies spying on our citizens with the Law being on your side; You can't fight your Own agencies because you handed over the Law to them. You as a citizen of the state of Pakistan will lose from both agencies in the end. This is exactly why Pakistan has such a messed up system; Pakistanis don't have an educated foresight of every step they take. They don't think long term. Only short term gains.

Same thing with the whole State of Pakistan certifying you as being Muslim. That was us handing over our religious freedom to the State. Good job, whoever jumped on that bandwagon. In trying to stop the Qadiyani/Ahmedi we gave up our own religious freedoms as well. Again, a shortsighted thought process. Same thing again with Blasphemy laws. Again and again this incessant ineptitude of governing is not with the Government, this credit goes to the Pakistani awaam.
