I think it is very silly of religious leaders and politicians to avoid discussions and debates in society.
Only open debates and discussions can help us discover the truth about things.
All wrong ideas against islam can be clearly seen wrong if people take the trouble to read the quran in its own context with sense of issues discussed in the quran.
Islam is all about how people can live in this world peacefully ie by accepting humanity as the basis. So long as people live with sense of social justice, fair play and doing for each other what needs to be done as a family then why would there be any fights?
Allah says, follow the prophet so that allah loves you. Not by growing right zise beard and wearing clothes like him but by estabilishing and accomplishing what he wanted ie a family like atmosphere in the world. Making this world a better place for all human beings. Now anyone who has sense would like to see a better world except the mentally ill who wants to be the master of the rest by making others his slaves.
If a king leads his army in to a battle field to fight and they start counting hairs in his head, the battle will be lost. This is what muslims are fighting over pushing aside the actual message of the prophet.
The west is very much near to what islam wants so where is the problem? There is no conflict between islam and humanitry. However, any people muslims or nonmuslims who want to bend islam to their whims to cause trouble, we should learn to deal with them appropriately. Kill the mental virus in their heads by doses of knowledge of proper islam. It takes a bit of time and effort but it works.

According to the quran,
033.033 YUSUFALI: And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless.
005.032 YUSUFALI: On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.
004.092 YUSUFALI: Never should a believer kill a believer; but (If it so happens) by mistake, (Compensation is due): If one (so) kills a believer, it is ordained that he should free a believing slave, and pay compensation to the deceased's family, unless they remit it freely. If the deceased belonged to a people at war with you, and he was a believer, the freeing of a believing slave (Is enough). If he belonged to a people with whom ye have treaty of Mutual alliance, compensation should be paid to his family, and a believing slave be freed. For those who find this beyond their means, (is prescribed) a fast for two months running: by way of repentance to Allah: for Allah hath all knowledge and all wisdom.
004.093 YUSUFALI: If a man kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (For ever): And the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him.
