why is our import bill growing?

If we remember that last year import duty on raw materials was reduced by 6 percent and after that import of raw material picked up. In the last few months the price of commodities also increased a lot. Palm oil rates increased a lot too in the last year and everyone knows about increase in petroleum prices. Its a shame that an agricultural country like pakistan also imports wheat and sugar. Sadly the government has slapped bans on imports of CBU vehicles which only amount to 30 million per month and in six months will only reduce import bill by 180 million dollars. Not to forget that about 11% of the import bill is corona vaccine.

Simply because we don't manufacture any quality products. If there was good locally made stuff available and that too at a reasonable price, why wouldn't people buy it and we wouldn't need to import so much stuff.

Thats true but that has been the case for forever now whereas the import bill is extraordinary this year. By the end of the fiscal year the trade deficit will be 55 billion dollars.

That only means there is a lot of money in Pakistani pockets to spend. The economy is hot, and the demand is there. As you can see from the above post people are buying A to Z imported stuff.

Also appreciate the rapid rise in exports which is reaching a historic figure of ~ $3B/month. Pakistan has the biggest rise in exports in South Asia, leaving behind even Bangladesh.

This trade imbalance will soon come down with declining oil prices, a real bad omen for PDM.
