KARACHI:
Members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) turned a talk by the economic team of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday into an unruly celeb fest, leaving little time for an informed discussion on policy matters.

The KCCI had invited Imran Khan, along with his economic policy think-tank comprising Asad Umar and Jahangir Tarin to present his economic roadmap of Pakistans economy. However, no meaningful exchange of economic ideas took place, as both Umar and Tarin chose to stay mute throughout the meeting.

After a painfully long and clichd speech by former KCCI president Siraj Kassim Teli, which he ended reluctantly after loud boos from the audience, Khan took the podium and regaled attendees with anecdotes from the lives of Malaysias Mahathir Mohamad, Turkeys Tayyip Erdogan and Indias Nitish Kumar, who is said to have ended corruption from the state of Bihar in 90 days as chief minister.

Were going to do away with the Ministry of Railways and turn the railways into a corporation. We will also make Pakistan International Airlines a corporation by taking it away from the Ministry of Defence, Khan thundered to the audience.

He observed that Karachis law and order problem could not be fixed without first de-politicising the police. Deputing the army and rangers is not going to solve Karachis security problem, he said. Saying that his economic advisers believed that the tax-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio could be increased by at least 5%, Khan added that a higher boost in revenue collection was possible given the elaborate plan the PTI had envisioned for the reformation of the Federal Board of Revenue and to incentivise the bureaucracy to work efficiently.

Khan also vowed to turn all governor houses and other palatial government-owned residences into public parks, educational institutes, libraries and museums. Pandering to right-wing sentiment, he stated he was in favour of regional trade without putting the Kashmir issue on the backburner.

After predicting that the PTI will achieve a two-thirds majority in the next general election, Khan said his party would introduce constitutional amendments that will put an end to all kinds of foreign aid. We will make it illegal to accept foreign aid. It is the biggest curse. We will balance our budgets and become self-reliant, he said. Khan also asked the business community to do away with its apolitical approach, saying every citizen was supposed to speak up against injustice in society.

Perhaps it was the non-serious atmosphere or the maybe frivolous mood of the businessmen many of whom had brought along their families to catch a glimpse of the dashing former cricketing star which forced Umar to simply tune out by the end of the meeting. Umar had to ask a questioner to repeat his query when the PTI chairman unexpectedly requested him to respond on his behalf. In response, Umar ducked the question, which was about the development of Pakistans capital markets, by saying that he knew the questioner personally and would discuss the matter with him in detail later.

COMMENTS: Nevermind the negative slant on this reporting by Tribune. Not sure why that is. But I found Khan's words VERY encouraging. Yes, you may question that "Asif he's saying that now but he wont do it". But the thing is, he is thinking straight! He gets it. Couple of months ago when PTI released its Economic policy, they advocated a 4.5% deficit. Mr Khan has maybe changed his stand and I am delighted to here that. Also, his words on the Railway and PIA are intriguing. I feel he envisions every entity of the Govt as self-sustaining. That will make the economic environment very robust.

I don't know about you Asif but I think IK is a great guy but he and his team is clueless in these matters. They really believe that turning railways and airlines into non-private Corporations is the answer:lol:.

Making outside AID illegal and balancing budgets are just slogans:lol:.

I was watching one program on his economic policy with lots of " Gol mol " answers to even minor questions the host was incapable of asking tough questions and he just played along.

Root of the problem is corruption, and family parties with their cronies. Yes, you need good policies. However, if the leaders are corrupt then their is no policy in the world that can help us.

Two big drags on the economy --- 1) Law and order situation 2) non-existence of Governance

Pakistan's bureaucracy both on the federal level and in the provinces is recent years has been completely paralyzed and full of people brought in through favoritism and quota system --countries function with efficient and dedicated civil servants.

Unicorn, you have seen me get critical of IK, going as far as calling him a LIAR. Remember that? If I wouldnt praise him for fixing that very issue, I'd be hypocritical. Sure, one can say these are just slogans. But earlier even the slogan was missing! So progress as been made, however minute.. it is progress.

About gol mol talk. Yaar no one is born a learned person. He is a professional cricketer for crying out loud sake. He gets a few sensible ppl around him and he starts to understand issues. Thats a good thing. Thats a VERY good thing. A very healthy sign. I am honestly encouraged.

Pracha, I feel corruption is a symptom of much bigger multiple problems. Lately I have been studying Non-linear Complex systems. I feel population growth plays a big role in increase in corruption. Dont look for causation, just go with correlations. Then we have the baised monetary system favoring those in power. Then we have the complete lack of participation of the general public in restoring any sort of justice. I hear people blowing themselves up in masajid. I dont hear people blowing themselves up in the Senate or Parliament or the homes of the famous politicians. People are used to thinking in 1 way, even if that way doesnt work. The biggest planning for Pakistan right now is "HOPE". Thats the only strategy for Pakistan right now. Many educated families have already left Pakistan with their wealth. Its not a society thats feeding in on itself now.

Sadly, I feel the United States is changing course to a similar path too.

There is no hope for humanity.

You may be partially right. However, we have numerous counter examples. Look at countries with large populations (per area) - Like Japan, South Korea, and even India. Yes all these countries, especially India have pervasive corruption. However, the difference is that these countries have developed systems and institutions to counter the impulse for corruption. Unfortunately, our establishment, and "democratic" parties have systematically destroyed institutions. Now compare N. Korea, and former E. Germany. These countries are/were dictatorial and see the stark difference btw their sister countries. We need a leader who is honest and believe in system/institution building. We have seen how the countries have turned themselves around withing half a generation and pakistan will probably bounce back even faster if given a chance by an honest/competent leadership.

You may agree or disagree with IK's view but atleast he is trying to implement it. If anyone else has better solutions then start your own movement instead of critisising from behind a screen!

There is no cure for the ignorance of the masses. The stupidity of the crowd is exponentially related to its size. I feel that even if IK comes into Power, he wont be able to change the way mothers in Pakistan bring up their kids.

There's a whole set of other issues too.
1. The Global Financial issues.
2. The Global human growth rate.
3. The depletion of global non-renewable natural resources
4. The exponential increase of noise in this age of info-technology
5. The intellectual dishonesty of the Academia

The world is truly in a very very sad state. To be blunt, a major world war is the only outcome scenario.

So, lets discuss the airline i.e. PIA in this case.
DO you know the real problem PIA is facing ? PIA has a problem of what many other government corporations have i.e. "nokri to karni ha LAKIN kaam nahi karna" and its goes from TOP to the BOTTOM. Now, how would it change once they are not under any ministry ? Answer is simple, the top management would be forced to show profit or else they will be fired i.e. they have to balance their budget. Secondly, they will be out of political influence hence they will make decision that serves PIA the best, not their commissions. The same applies to railways.
BTW, since your are being such a smart@$$, why don't you present a solution to this ? DO you have any or are you the "hawai firing" here like many NOONers ?

I would love to see words come to reality as word have always been spoken before but what should I do of people I meet? As I know why was Asad relieved of his job (incompetence should I say?) and what Imran did to Admiral Javed and how impudent he became that right after the call ended, Admiral had to pick up pen and a paper and write his resignation. With the likes of tareen and khan having hijacked things in the party and hardcores like mizari and Iqbal left the party after being utterly humiliated due to being truthful, I smell yet another dead rat in the pool of politics of Pakistan as ever.

O yes! I agree to the part of governor house and other places being turned into public parks as shuttling between lahore gymkhana and governor house within the past few days, I have heard many things and got past many revelations but the idea struck me many times while roaming around listening to what actually is going on.

you can hire well educated consultants, policy makers, visionary scholars to establish long run policies and road maps. BUT you need an honest leader on top of them to implement what is proposed. Do you have any clue what you wrote?
Lack of courage to implement policies was missing in whole GAME until Khan came into picture.

I agree about the corruption even if the corruption is not there you still need competent policies.
