Hopes were briefly raised when a dull streak was seen in Soho imagery

Comet Ison was severely battered in its encounter with the Sun, and largely destroyed.
Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer emerge.
Astronomers continued to search for the object, but it eventually became clear that the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" had gone out with a whimper.
Despite its great size, Ison was probably torn apart in the immense heat and tidal forces so close to the Sun.
The European Space Agency's experts on the Soho Sun-watching satellite called the death of the comet at about 21:30 GMT.
"Our Soho scientists have confirmed, Comet Ison is gone," Esa's twitter feed announced.
Ison had captivated skywatchers with its promise ever since it was discovery by Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok in 2012.
A "fresh", 2km-wide object flung in towards the inner Solar System from its home far beyond the outer planet Neptune, it was hoped it might produce a brilliant tail that would arc across the night sky, perhaps for weeks.
And, as it got closer and closer to the Sun, its ices did indeed begin to vaporise, releasing dust that shimmered in a distinctive trailing stream.
But from early on, it was clear Ison was unlikely to be spectacular; it was just not brightening in the way experienced comet watchers had anticipated.
This led scientists to fear for its survival when it eventually grazed past the star at a distance of just 1.2 million km at 18:35 GMT on Thursday.
Soho followed Ison as it began its sweep around the back of the Sun, but then failed to pick up a coherent object at the time it was supposed to re-emerge. A streak in the imagery was interpreted as the last fizzling of debris.
Other telescopes such as Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory could detect no clear sign of the comet's nucleus, either.
Passing close to the Sun, Ison would have been subjected to temperatures over 2,000C. And the immense gravity of the star would also have pulled and squeezed on the object as it tumbled end over end.
All the evidence suggests Ison's nucleus was torn apart in the close pass, in the same way that Comet Lovejoy - a previous hopeful in 2011 - was disrupted.
Comets will stay in the news, however. Next year, in October, Comet Siding Spring will breeze past Mars at a distance of little more than 100,000km. And then in November, the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission will attempt to place a probe on the nucleus of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

I have especially registered to reply to this idotic thread

NO, Comet ISON was in no way .....zero chance.....not by a miracle.....any DANGER to EARTH.....it would have flown many million miles over EARTH if it had survived.
Its destruction by the Sun robbed us of a great night show, where it would have been visible to the naked eye in the night sky.

I Repeat again, Comet ISON was in no way a danger to earth. Kindly read what u r posting

What do you mean by "close" and "far". Do you think 6.5 million miles are far far away? Hahahahaha Hitting of this comet into the sun could be equally dangerous to earth. Electromagnetic surge can plunge earth into darkness. Then you won't be able to draw money from you plastic card lol.

1. its 64 Million KM / 40 Million miles (again a simple Google search would have given u the right number)
2. Comet hardly had a radius of 1-2KM, it would have either vaporized or broken into many tiny species if (which it was not going to according to its orbit) it hit the SUN causing no major CME that would harm Earth.
"hahahahaha" do some research before posting & don't embarrass yourself, its easy, u must have heard of google.

And there has been no blackout on news regarding ISON, I hv been following its News fr a year, today it was almost real time coverage by NASA, including a Google Hangout which anyone could join

The majority opinion is that it broke up and is no more intact (in one piece), The thing that has re-emerged could most likely be a dust trail (you can see from the image its very faint) but nothing is certain.

and you are looking to me a uscentom agent who has "specially" joined this forum with fake id to spread disinformation and lies

This is hopeless. its 'water-kit' all over again. The too i wasted my time & energy explaining simple physics too ppl on forums & comment sections but the continued believing.

No the 'dust can not do any damage to the earth'. Please, Please a little research can do wonders, try it.

And me an agent? seriously i would like to study the mind that comes up with things like that, its completely baffling to me that a human can be so paranoid. So easily believe something which has no scientific sense and blame those as agents who disagrees.

BTW, Twitter & The Web is still a buzz with ISON news there has been no cover ups and lies, the image ur are sharing are from spacecraft belonging to NASA (a US Agency, whose agent i supposedly am) & ESA.

The easy thing is that you instead of sharing random youtube videos with hardly 3K views, come back to this thread after 1,2 or 3 months and tell me what doom ISON brought to this world.
Funny that the CME only targeted Time Warner Services, must be a conspiracy by the sun
