Sipahi Maqbool Hussain Spent 40 Years In India’s Prisons But Remained Quiet Despite Torture!

The recent decision taken by Pakistan to call for an Indian spy’s execution has set the sub-continent ablaze. India’s rhetoric is aggressive, while Pakistan is firm on executing the spy. This incident reminded us of one of the greatest war stories in Pakistan’s history, one that is based on bravery, courage, and resilience. This is Sipahi Maqbool Hussain’s story.

Maqbool Hussain was a sepoy for the Pakistan Army who took part in the 1965 War against India. In 1965, Sipahi Maqbool Hussain was taken as a prisoner by the Indian forces, but he was never given the status of a Prisoner of War, which provides him with certain rights and benefits. He vanished and was declared missing on August 20, 1965.

The Indians thought they could break down Sipahi Maqbool Hussain and take information from him. They tried everything in their power, all sorts of mental and physical torture, but they could never break Maqbool Hussain’s resilience. The torture grew to such an extent that they cut off Sipahi Maqbool’s tongue, taking away his power to speak forever.

After spending 40 years in Indian jails, Sipahi Maqbool Hussain was released in 2005, at the Wagha border prisoner exchange. Maqbool was given as civilian prisoner status, not the status of a Prisoner of War. The man spent 40 years in Indian jails, subject to inhumane torture and negate but he never said a word against his country, Pakistan. It is said that Maqbool Hussain, whenever he bled, wrote “Pakistan Zindabad!” on the walls with his blood.

When Sipahi Maqbool Hussain was released, he had already lost his senses due to the brutal torture he had faced at the hands of the Indians for 40 years. When he was questioned about his identity, he kept replying by writing: “No. 335139”, which was his Army bearing number.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) even co-produced a drama on Sipahi Maqbool Hussain’s heartwrenching but patriotic story, directed by Haider Imam Rizvi. According to different sources, allegedly, it is being learnt that Sipahi Maqbool Hussain is still alive and lives in CMH Rawalpindi, under Pakistan Army’s supervision.

A story with such vigor, valor, and sacrifice is still unknown to many. People don’t know about Sipahi Maqbool Hussain’s 40 years in Indian prisons, they don’t know about the mental and physical torture he bore, just for Pakistan. On the other hand, there is an Indian spy who was caught and was quick to throw-up all the details about his mission and agency.

we dont have balls to hang him simple unlike india who hanged ajmal qasaab right away!
second if we already got all the info whats the purpose of his captivity ? free ki roti! I guess his blood wont do any difference to our country!
release him or exchange him for isi agents, his work is already done

If indian spy is not accused of any murder in Pakistan, then use him in prisoner exchange and get someone like sipahi maqbool hussain released.

May Allah give him greatest place in Jannat. We are proud of our soldiers.
I think, the sipahis of armed forces and there families should also get similar respect, benefits n privileges as their officers and their families get. And traditional things like separate wards for sipahi(non-officers) & officers and separate waiting-lounges in the CMH hospitals should be obolished as well.
As a measure of austerity when each citizen is under debt of nearly 150k, and given that the salary, perks n privileges including accommodation etc of armed forces officers are quite decently placed, I think there should be sanity in some privileges for instance allotment of land worth millions that an individual officer gets on top of either a plot in DHA or flat in Askari...etc Does a sipahi get them too?
