ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Thursday describing illiteracy as root-cause of growing terrorism and extremism said the government was focusing on inculcating quality education in youth for positive mental growth.

Terrorism is a main challenge for the country and ignorance is the major root-cause, the Prime Minister said while addressing the medal awarding ceremony of Federal Board of Education students who excelled in Higher Secondary School Certificate examinations here at the PM Secretariat.

The Prime Minister said destruction of schools and colleges by terrorists in Swat and Malakand was a glaring example of how Islam was being distorted by a handful of people.

The Prime Minister said the government had taken strict measures to counter militancy in the country. We believe that actions speak louder than words, he said and added the government would not let the country fall into the hands of militants.

He said Pakistan cannot be treated as a failed state and said the nation supports the belief that terrorists were state-enemies and were working at the behest of foreign agenda.

He strongly criticized the earlier ban imposed by militants on girls education in Malakand region and said on the contrary Islam urged education for both men and women. Gilani said there was a need to improve countrys image and education could greatly help in this regard.

He stressed the need for educating the new generation on modern lines to help them compete with the world. Gilani said the new education policy focused on vocational skills would help the youth exploit greater job opportunities within the country and abroad.

The Prime Minister said due to the good governance and dynamic economic policies of the present government, Pakistan is no more a failed state and it has come out of its problems and nullified the claims of its opponents that the government will collapse soon.

Gilani mentioned in details the contribution by his forefathers for promoting education in Multan and its suburbs since 1834. He said their efforts were for the uplift of Muslims who did not have access to education. He mentioned several educational institutions including Anjuman Millat-e-Islamia and Nishter Medical College founded by his family elders, and vowed to continue the tradition of promoting knowledge for all.

Private Sector Role

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said the government was encouraging private sector in education as it could not handle the growing needs alone.

Talking to reporters at the PM Secretariat after the award distribution ceremony of students who topped the higher secondary school certificate of Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, The Prime Minister said that the previous policy of nationalization of educational institutions was wrong. He said it was not possible for the government now to cater to the growing demand and meet its priority to provide education for all.

He said the private sector was in a better position to provide extensive education facilities for the masses as they can invest more and provide wider range of services.

To a question about the re-opening of educational institutions for girls in Swat and Malakand, Gilani said the first objective was to clear the area of miscreants, establish the writ of the state, setup cantonments, strengthen the local police and finally reconstruct the schools and colleges destroyed by the miscreants.

The Prime Minister referring to the education policy said since it was a provincial subject it was being formulated with the consultations of all stakeholders.

He expressed satisfaction over the outstanding performance by the students of HSSC and announced prize money of Rs 100,000 Rs70,000 and Rs 50,000 each for first, second and third position holders.

Prime Minister Gilani also awarded gold medals, certificates and cash prizes amongst the first, second and third position holders and particularly lauded the students, their teachers and parents for the accomplishment.
