KARACHI: After a yawning gap of three years, Pakistani exporters are on the verge of accomplishing 200,000 tonnes of kinnow exporting goal, which may spell bright prospects for the growers, farmers and exporters alike.

By the end of the export season, which would culminate during the current month, the export of the citrus fruit could end up more than 200,000 tonnes at around 215,000 tonnes worth more than $120 million, which can be termed as achievement by exporters.

The traditional buyers of Pakistani kinnow includes Middle Eastern countries, Iran, Bangladesh, Eastern Europe, Russia and Ukraine while Indonesia and Malaysia which have recently emerged as strong buyers of local kinnows on account of its flavour and unmatched taste.

During the last three years Pakistani kinnow export suffered colossal on account of lack of attention by the government to resolve pending issues of exporters and multiple hindrances they had to face leading to stifle export of the most desired fruit of the winter season.

A crisis like situation prevailed relating to kinnow export during the previous three years, which was described by unprecedented by majority of citrus fruit exporters which have blamed the official apathy as major source of concern for them to resolve pending issues.

Waheed Ahmad Chairman All Pakistan Vegetable and Fruit Exporters Association claimed government departments including Ministry of Commerce, Trade Development of Pakistan and Pakistan Horticulture Development and export Council squarely failed to resolve scores of problems citrus fruit exporters had to face causing them sleepless nights.

The foremost issue faced by the exporters are complete halt to kinnow export to Iran, which imports around 80,000 tonnes of the fruit every year mainly due to non-issuance of form-E to exporters by the State Bank of Pakistan required by them to carry their shipments.

Several reminders by the exporters to concerned official departments to take cognisance of the situation proved abortive, as they appear least interested in resolving the major issue.

Furthermore there were expectations of resumption of large volumes of kinnow exports to Indonesia from the previous years as there was an understanding between Pakistani and Indonesian officials to bring down taxes on reciprocal basis on kinnow and palm oil respectively.

However the issue remain unresolved in this regard as a consequence kinnow export to Indonesia failed to take off.
Another major hindrances faced by the kinnow exporters during the current year relates to unnecessary delaying bureaucratic hassles and delaying tactics used by the custom officials at Karachi Port to prolong export process which was causing rusting of the export consignments destined for different destinations.

The situation appeared positive in favour of exporters this year as the decision by the government to start the kinnow export season from December 1t spelled salutary impact on the export of the citrus fruit.

Previously never before any specific date was fixed for the commencement of kinnow export by the government but this year realising the setback suffered by the exporters during the last many years towards realisation of desired targets, compelled the Ministry of Commerce to unveil a fix date in this regard.

He said the decision by the Ministry was positive in the sense usually in the month of November, quality wise the initial kinnow yield is generally unacceptable to majority of importers from across the globe.

He said announcing a proper export date by the government enabled exporters to dispatch quality produce of the most desired fruit of the winter season, which yields substantial revenue to the national exchequer annually.
For the first time since the kinnow export started some 40 years ago, Pakistani kinnow fetched unprecedented rate of 30 to 32 dirham per 10 kg on back of quality of the citrus fruit exported.
