Pakistan has potential to become a global economic player. It's a powerful vision which can be realised if there is a focus on economic growth and implementing the vital reforms needed to stimulate and underpin growth. Speaking at the Karachi School of Business and Leadership, Mark Lowcock, UK government's senior official,[/HI] told business leaders and students that countries succeeding in today's global race are those reforming the fastest to generate growth and reduce poverty.

Mark Lowcock said: "Pakistan has everything it takes to be a successful, thriving, prosperous Islamic democracy." "If you develop a clear and shared vision, sustain a long term commitment to travelling the long road of reform, and refuse to be deterred by the problems that will inevitably arise, then you can transform your country within a generation."

[HI]Citing examples from across Asia and Africa, Mark Lowcock pressed that Pakistan's stake in the global economy, and future investment potential, could be transformed. It has enormous potential for trade. Population dynamics mean that over the coming decades it could reap a demographic dividend, if the economy develops in a way that creates jobs for all young people. [/HI]

Lowcock stressed elections as an important watershed in embedding an inclusive political system, emphasised the importance of greater transparency in public operations, and highlighted the need to broaden the national dialogue on economic reform. [HI]"Pakistan cannot sustain high rates of economic growth without a sufficient, reliable supply of energy.... The sector needs to be put on a more commercial footing, including a regulatory and tariff structure that is attractive to investors," he said. "A tax system that collects less than 10 percent of GDP is unsustainable for any modern country. Without agreement and tangible progress on broader and fairer taxation, Pakistan will be unable to invest in a more prosperous future." [/HI]

"Pakistan needs to invest in its best asset, which is your own people, especially in health and education to build human capital. It is also critical to promote women's participation in the economy. This is an issue of fairness and good governance. But it is also crucially an economic issue."

Lowcock emphasised that[HI] "Pakistan must take steps to harness private sector dynamism in boosting investment and growth. Inefficient public sector enterprises play too large a role in the economy. They should be reformed or privatised. Bureaucratic barriers to private business need to be reduced and property rights better protected." "There are enormous benefits to Pakistan from resuming your historical status as the regional hub between central Asia and south Asia with strong links to the Middle East. This involves reforming the trade regime to make it more open to the world and providing the infrastructure necessary for an important trading hub,"[/HI] he said.

[HI]Pakistan could potentially become the UK's largest development programme globally. Department for International Development (DFID) has made a commitment to expand its support here, potentially reaching 200 billion rupees over 4 years. [/HI]

Addressing the gathering[HI], Chairman of the Karachi School for Business and Leadership Hussain Dawood said: "Pakistan is faced with numerous internal and external challenges and one of the ways these can be addressed is by nurturing and grooming its human talent. The best way to do so is by establishing centres of excellence for applied education and training. KSBL is one such example, being established in collaboration with the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, offering world-class education in leadership and business with a focus on ethics and social responsibility". [/HI]The Department for International Development (DFID) is the UK's Government department responsible for promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty. The central focus of DFID is a commitment to the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015.

Every Pakistani needs to support a vision of Pakistan as a progressive, economically viable and secure country. We must make Pakistan our priority and Invest in our country. Sacrifices from all of us will make our country succeed.

More importantly we need to provide equal opportunities for all our people irrespective of whatever ethnic background we belong to, and have a greater role for women to play in our economy and society.

Long Live Pakistan!

I think we have sufficient human capital to put our country on the right track. We are primarily lacking in good governance. However, as per your suggestion the Bank of England recently appointed the governor from Canada, purely based on his performance.

There is no harm in benchmarking and adopting best practice from others.

We have all the potential, but not a good leader. you can see UAE the local people have low IQ and are far backwark than any Pakistani worker, even people can not communicate properly. Their leader had a vision, taking help from all over the world, their achievement is remarable. If they can do it, we can do it much better.

(clap) what a beautiful analysis a foreigner did about pakistan when the politicians in govt, opposition and establishment are sleeping on their jobs like they dont have a clue how to run the country ? They know it but dont wanna do it because lack of honesty and sincerety , just busy in robbing this nation . One day Insha allah someone honest ,sincere and patriotic will come and take care of all the problems this nation is facing. Pakistan have lots of potential ,resources and educated people ,just needs an honest leadership who have national interest not self-interest will lead this nation to progress and prosperity . I pray to God almighty that day come soon, ameen.

When Pakistan and India officials sits together , they talk nicely ...

But what they want for each other is quite opposite...

They want to kill each other....

Same is other countries..... understand !!!

I sadly agree with you. Maybe a certain level of humiliation is required by the masses to get back into their senses. And unfortunately the level of humiliation required for the people of the Subcontinent is fairly high.

you can put it that way, if people cannot run their own country, its better for somebody else to run it for them for the benefit of the people.

Good analysis, however not possible unless we purge the extremism from society, provide peace & justice and bring stability, overcome energy shortages and do drastic economic & tax reforms.

Anyway enjoy an old joke on potential
A young boy went up to his father and asked: "What is the difference between potentially and realistically?"

The father pondered for a while, then answered: "Go ask your mother if she would sleep with Robert Redford for a million dollars. Also, ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars. Come back and tell me what you have learned."

So the boy went to his mother and asked: "Mum, would you sleep with Robert Redford for a million dollars?"
The mother replied: "Of course I would. I wouldn't pass up an opportunity like that."

The boy then went to his sister and said: "Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?"
The girl replied: "Oh gosh!! I would just love to do that! I would have to be nuts to pass up that opportunity!!".

The boy then thought about it for two or three days and went back to his dad.
His father asked him: "Did you find out the difference between potentially and realistically?"

The boy replied, "Yes, potentially we're sitting on two million dollars, but realistically we're living with two slappers."

The father replied, "That's my boy!"
