Food and lack of exercise is the biggest reason for this devastating epidemic in this country.

Intermittent fasting can do wonders. Also try to cut down to 2 meals/day instead of 3 with no grazing in between. Save time and money at the same time.

There might be some technical/data reason for this higher number compared to the neighboring regions.
Will some expert on measurement criteria throw more light on these numbers?

Wondering about the same with such a huger difference in Pak and India. However, the diet of the two countries are quite different. They do eat meat but not to the extent that we day.

Also the playgrounds within our schools are slowly shrinking that starts children on the right foot for a lifelong habit of physician activity.

Have also witnessed a drastic change in our foods. Most of our food used to be home made but we have slowly shifted away to calorie densed meals from restaurants and dhabas.

Have no disagreement with what you have written about the diet, exercise and lifestyle. Also, I'm not a medical practitioner to have a well-formed opinion about these numbers.

However, as I understand, the causes of (most kinds of) diabetes are unknown, and are genetic related. There might be a genetic link to the modern fast food lifestyle but is yet unknown. There is no cure as such as well, With the medicines, diabetes is managed and controlled.
So diet and lifestyle may not be directly linked to the inception of the disease but to the care, cure, severity and fatality of decease. That's why the standards of medicine practice and pharmaceutical industry, within a certain region, come into play. I was wondering whether there are some differences in practices/standards which are the source of differences in these (absolute) counts of patients.

There are 2 main types of diabetes

DM-1: Predominantly genetic/auto-immune and much less common than DM-2.
Commonly star in teenagers and younger adults.

DM-2: Obesity and sedentary lifestyle is the predominant risk factor rather than genetics. In the West, it is commonly associated with lower education and socioeconomic status as in poorer neighborhoods, fast foods are cheaper than healthier diet.

DM-2 used to be seen in the middle age population, 50s - 60s age group. However, due to obesity pandemic - this diabetes is now seen in a younger population; i.e, 20 - 30s.

Fast food and Dhaba culture is ruining our health and the whole nation will be paying the price as DM is one of the worst chronic condition one can have.

Correction:
DM-1 is sporadic/autoimmune and usually does not run in the family.

DM-2: Commonly runs in the family, but obesity is likely a huge risk factor. As sometimes it can be reversed by a drastic weight loss, like after a bariatric surgery.
