Islamabad, June 13: Declassifying its defence outlay for the first time in 44 years, Pakistan on Saturday hiked its military spending by a whopping 15.3 percent to Rs 342.9 billion for 2009-10.
The Budget at a Glance document said Rs 342.9 billion had been allocated for defence compared to Rs 296 billion for fiscal 2008-09. Further details were not immediately available.
The total outlay in the budget for 2009-10 was Rs 2.89 trillion.
The increased defence expenditure, which will be effective from July 1, comes amid growing terror attacks by the Taliban in major Pakistani cities.
Presenting the budget in the National Assembly, Minister of State for Finance Hina Rabbani Khar said allowances for armed forces personnel would be increased. The increase would be equivalent to a month's salary.
