ISLAMABAD: Attorney General of Pakistan, Munir A Malik told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that sales tax was not imposed on milk, eggs, fish, fruits and other food items.
He said that action would be taken against those found receiving GST on food items. The AG also produced the government directives in the apex court, stating that the GST was not imposed on food items.
A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing a case pertaining to hike in petroleum prices and sales tax.
During the course of hearing the CJ remarked that even the President of Pakistan was not authorized to impose tax. He added that only the parliament was authorized to impose taxes.
