The average adult has about five liters of blood, depending on size and weight. Gunshot wounds can cause a person to hemorrhage and die in fairly short order, particularly if the would is in a difficult place manage. A new invention could change that by packing and putting pressure on a gunshot wound in just 15 seconds. The product is called XStat, developed by RevMedx.

XStat is a clear syringe-like container that applies dozens of 12-millimeter-wide sponges directly into an open wound. Once the sponges contact the blood, they quickly swell up and cling to the wound, ensuring that they stay in place. Enough pressure is placed directly on the laceration to stop bleeding so the victim can be transported for surgery.

One of the developers for this new device is John Steinbaugh, who retired from the U.S. Army as a Special Operations medic. Traditionally, battlefield wounds from bullets or shrapnel are packed tightly with gauze, which is incredibly painful and doesnt always work. Hemorrhages are the top cause of military deaths, and this could save lives.

The idea started out in search of a product that worked like expanding foam insulation. It would just be squirted in and then expand to create the pressure. Unfortunately, the blood pressure from the wounded blood vessel was too powerful and the foam was not able to create a tight seal. Prototypes were made from regular kitchen sponges, but XStat is now made from wood pulp that is fast-acting and sterile. From the time the sponges are administered, adequate pressure is created before the medic can even finish applying the other bandages.

After the wound has been packed, the victim heads off to surgery. To ensure that even the most careful surgeon does not leave any of the sponges behind, they are all marked with an X that easily shows up on x-rays. This prevents a rogue sponge from getting in, getting infected, and causing sepsis.

Battlefields arent the only application for XStat, it could be used for hemorrhages caused during childbirth as well, particularly in developing countries. In fact, last year the device won seed money from Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge For Development that was funded by various government agencies and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Currently, each device costs about $100, though the price is expected to go down as production levels go up. RevMedX applied for expedited approval with the FDA, and are currently in the final stages before approval. The company also has other innovative products with military medics in mind, such as the AirWrap bandage that inflates to add pressure and XGauze, which is a roll of gauze with the expanding sponges built in.

This is effective against tracers or pericing bullets only. not against other types, which are normally used, like shot guns , explosive bullets etc. But good stuff. finally video game stuff coming up in real life.

New syringe can heal gunshot wounds in 15 seconds

A new battlefield lifesaver in the form of a syringe can heal a gunshot wound in just seconds. Supporters hope the XStat will replace guaze, which army medics have used to treat life threatening war injuries for centuries.
The device was designed by US company RevMedx, which claims the apparatus can stop a wound from bleeding in just 15 seconds. The XStat is a modified syringe that injects tiny tablet-sized sponges into a wound. RevMedx says the device was inspired by the design of a standard emergency tire repair kit.

Its creators initially experimented by spraying foam into wounds, John Steinbaugh, a US Army Special Operations medic who is on the design team at RevMedx, told Popular Science.

Thats what we pictured as the perfect solution: something you could spray in, it would expand, and bleeding stops, But we found that blood pressure is so high, blood would wash the foam right out, he said.

They then decided to use sponges measuring one centimeter in diameter the size of an aspirin or paracetamol tablet. Like the foam, these sponges expanded to fill the wound. They also stuck to moist surfaces and created enough pressure to stem the bleeding.

The core technology behind the XStat dressing is mini-sponges that expand upon contact with blood resulting in a nearly immediate hemostatic effect without manual compression, a statement on the RevMedx website reads.

Using the Xstat on the battlefield, its makers say, is simple. A medic would simply insert the syringe into a wound and press down on the plunger to inject the miniature sponges.

RevMedx initially experimented on animal wounds. After early success, the company managed to secure $5 million in funding from the US Army.

The company then finessed its design to use sponges made from wood pulp coated with a blood-clotting, antimicrobial substance called chitosan. Each sponge is marked with a special X that shows up on X-rays to ensure that none of the tiny pills are left in the body.

RevMedx is currently developing three different sizes of the syringe to treat a variety of wounds. Each one is made of lightweight polycarbonate and is expected to cost about $100. It is currently awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the US.

Treating wounds on the battlefield is messy and difficult, and the only way to stop a bleeding wound is by stuffing it with gauze often as deep as 12 centimeters into the body. Even then, hemorrhaging can occur, requiring the gauze to be removed and new material put in.

Uncontrolled bleeding is still the leading cause of death on the battlefield and the second leading cause of death for civilian traumas. However, most wounds are survivable.

According to a report published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the highest percentage of survivable battlefield deaths from 2001-2009 were from major trauma hemorrhage.

I spent the whole war on terror in the Middle East, so I know what a medic needs when someone has been shot. Ive treated a lot of guys who would have benefitted from this product. Thats what drives me, Steinbaugh told Popular Science.
