My interview with Voice of America about KPK Police reforms (Pashto)

I have written a book about KPK Police reforms which is based on our experience with KP Police. The book which is available on amazon kindle store and comes with an insightful analysis about the reforms. A free version is available on my blogsite.

I recently was interviewed by voice of america, sorry the interview is in Pashto but than it's about KP. I am sure you will find it very insightful if you understand pashto.

Ok here are some highlights for everyone, this was such a good interview. The host asked some real good questions.

- Police in Pakistan is a black box, nobody really knows how they operate. My book explains it all perhaps for the first time in detail.

- The purpose of the book, in part, is awareness so people and political leaders understand what real problems are so they can fix it.

- Reforms are not sincere, lacks commitment, mostly for showoff on social media.

- There is a lot of corruption in Police, even senior officers lack the guts to do the right thing.

- There are few template of corruption repeated most of the time, if we fix it, we will fix a lot of things (it's not been fixed).

- I gave examples how police reforms look great in media but isn't in reality.
(example 1). How they make model police stations but culture is same, they never use newly installed cameras to get to the truth.
(example 2). Gave example of recent DIKhan case were police is getting credit for arresting suspects but police also lodged (wrong) FIR against the girl's brother, these are bargaining chips, the girl has no chance, will have to drop the case.

A lot of other good stuff in the interview, I was very impressed by the questions. Very intellectual discussion.

I have also written about our experience with KP Police in the daily times here. That is an extremely short version of our experience but the book is very detailed, it breaks everything down and the last chapter is analysis of reforms in general.

Our view is that very few people actually get to work with police in general, hence, they are easy to mislead. What happened to us simply can't happen if there were real reforms, that too, in the heart of Peshawar in a police station which is next to IGP Office and central police lines.

i also have gone thru this interview, simply put you can find fault with any great projects as you can never have 100 percent correct system. There is always room for improvement even in best systems as todate no perfect system has been developed. However, this is a biased analysis which seems to be anp and pmln . I also have closely monitored the police system of kpk and i have no doubt it is best possible improvement one provincial govt can make.

i dnt disagree with you the examples you shared and it seems if we have a good IG at the top it works good if not there is no autocorrect system in placed. but still i wuld give them a credit that they started the process, and have put so much pressure through electronic and social media that if any things get wrong and it is reported they take immediate actions to restore their positive image . tey are at least concerend about their reputation. also i experienced myself and get a lot of positive reviews from the people of KPK . it is going to a positive direction . process could have been sped up but we still appreciate them

Guys, please evaluate whatever claims any gov makes with open mind. Any province's IGP or its gov will only say great things about its police. Please don't act like apologists for PTI. Police can be turned around in no time if there is real accountability and commitment.

Like I have said in the above interview, how police has punished about 5000 policemen but over 4000 of them are constables and head constables who has no powers and simply obey orders. Also I have pointed out in the interview there is not a single SP and above rank officer who is punished.

If you go by media cases then even Shebaz Sharif had his son in law arrested as well but that doesn't make Punjab police great.

I wouldn't disagree with you completely. However the state of KPK police is much better than it was a few years back. That's a start. When was the last time you attempted to write to Pervaiz Khattak or IK about it?

My friend PTI has such a widespread support on social media, they have been promoting KP Police crazy believing what they are told. It’s time to evaluate. Think about it, what will the most corrupt institution do if we give them full freedom without oversight? Sadly more sophisticated corruption!

See here KP Police IGP asking army to withdraw from Malakand as they will take care of it! Also that they are ready to take care of FATA as well where there is not a single police station! This is insane and it should give you the hint it’s all for media hype.

Don’t take me wrong, I am myself a hard PTI supporter and author of this article in DAWN. I defended Imran Khan and dharnas when everyone was against it.

It’s time we insafians wake up and ask some tough questions. Sorry mate, we are being fooled. This is NOT what we signed up for when we fought so hard for PTI to win!

I would like to give perspective of the case on which this book is written and where we worked from an ASI to IGP, you will be amazed to what extent police can go to, to save the influentials.

1. Police deliberately delayed our report (we have CCTV proof) - no action taken by senior police
2. Police registered rival FIR on incomplete medical report - Huge offence, Seniors did not take any action
3. Police invoked extreme section of law without referring to DPP - Big mistake - Senior took no action
4. Police refused to register our FIR while I had visible wounds and open cuts on face - Senior police took no action
5. We were arrested inside police station, where FIR was written in front of us - huge no no, senior took no action
6. There was no investigation what so ever - see the points below
7. My nephew nominated in the FIR but witness was police itself and the knew my nephew were not there, why were then they arrested
8. One of my nephew was present in his class at the time, which is solid alibi - police seniors did not accept it
9. His CDR record was requested which agains confirmed, he was at his college at the time, police senior against ignored it
10. There was one brave officer who wrote in his investigation that my nephew were indeed not present on the scene and recommend their names to be removed from the FIR - Police senior instead made that report disappear (we have not got it back after our complaint)
11. Police did not complete their investigation in the required 14 days (took them some 30+ days)
12. A JIT was later formed at our request. The report came out hugely in our favour. Police then hide this report from us because JIT said police is guilty or wrong doing. No action was taken on JIT report. I have then requested this report via RTI and obtained it finally.
13. I requested DIG to "re-investigate" the case, while this is my right, DIG did not allow re-invetigation knowing that we will be come out clear.
14. We pleaded Police to please remove my one nephew from FIR, they did not.
15. We pleaded at least register my FIR, they could not.

Now you tell me what did we do wrong? We knocked on every door but could no get any help. The case was crystal clear but police could not act and I mean senior police. So where are the reforms, may I ask? Is there any accountability? No why would police get fixed on their own?

Whether you are his brother or anyone else, what is proof of your statements? Your brother seems to me a biased because I also belong to Peshawar, however, live abroad but from day one, I am hearing that Police has been changed a lot in many of aspects but your brother gives another narrative. So bottom line is should I believe those my relatives and known people or your brother whom I don't know?
