Disgraced Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Asif on Wednesday apologised for his role in a notorious 2010 spot-fixing scandal, admitting his guilt for the first time and accepting a five-year ban.

The 30-year-old is the last of three players to come out with a confession, after team-mates Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir admitted their part and presented themselves for rehabilitation.

Asif, pace partner Amir and then-captain Butt were banned for contriving deliberate no-balls in return for money during the Lord’s Test against England in 2010.

A year later an anti-corruption tribunal of the International Cricket Council (ICC) banned Butt for 10 years,
with five suspended, Asif for seven years with two suspended and Amir for five years.

The tribunal had made confession, apology and rehabilitation mandatory to avoid the suspended portion of the ban.

“I accept the punishment from the ICC tribunal in 2011,” Asif said at a news conference.

“I apologise for my actions that have brought disrespect to my beloved country, to the millions of fans in Pakistan and in the world.”

The trio and their agent Mazhar Majeed were also jailed by an English court over the affair in 2011. The players were released last year.

Touted as the best new-ball bowler in the world by legendary Pakistani paceman Imran Khan, Asif’s career was first derailed in 2006 when he and fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar tested positive for banned steroids.

They were let off by a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) tribunal but another failed dope test in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 resulted in a one-year ban for Asif.

He was also detained at Dubai airport on return from the 2008 IPL after a banned drug was found in his possession.

Asif said he felt sorry for his repeated mistakes.

“When I look back at the events of my career, I feel very sorry,” he said.

Asif warned future players to avoid the pitfalls of fixing.

“I request to all the players who want to represent their countries that they must keep away from all sorts of corruption,” he said.

“I am ready to help any player who wants to avoid such pitfalls. I will duly cooperate with the ICC, its anti-corruption unit and with the PCB in fighting the corruption in the game.”

Asif said he was ready to go through the PCB rehabilitation programme.

“I have suffered a lot because of my wrongdoings. Now on the Independence Day of my country, I promise that once my ban finishes I will try to repair the damage I have done.”

Before the ban, Asif had taken 106 wickets in 23 Tests and was widely regarded as one of the most skillful new ball bowlers in the game.

Mostly agree with what you said but not sure if PTI is the only hope. The only hope is that people, that is us, fix themselves.

I remember that on TV the anchors were proclaiming this to be a conspiracy against the Pakistani cricketers and Pakistan. That hack, Mubashir Luqman, claimed on TV that he had irrefutable evidence that it was a huge conspiracy to snare innocent Pakistani players and that he will present all the evidence in the court in UK at his 'own expense.'

Asif is just trying to salvage what he can at this point and will say anything.

Its too late for an apology. If I have an authority in cricket I will never let three of them go any way near cricket, they have disgraced the game of cricket and ashamed us as a nation. They are national criminals I don't care how good they are as players,OK they should be forgiven for what they have done as its human to do mistakes but they should not be allowed to play at any level in Pakistan.

His career is finished. Now those on this forum who want Amir reinstated will be fighting over how we should also forgive this cheat. No wonder the country is a mess.

Asif shares spot-fixing details with PCB

Asif shares spot-fixing details with PCB

Mohammad Asif, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has had a meeting with the PCB's vigilance and anti-corruption department to share information related to the spot-fixing saga. His first meeting with the PCB was the second major step towards his rehabilitation program following his public confession last week to his part in spot-fixing during the Lords Test in 2010, vowing to make amends in order to revive his international career.

"I had my first session and will do more," Asif told reporters in Lahore after a two-and-half-hour meeting with the PCB. "Although it's a beginning, I am following the ICC directives for rehabilitation and will work further with the PCB. I have already apologised in public and today had given a formal written apology too."

Asif, who was found guilty of bowling a deliberate no-ball, will be 33 by the time the minimum of five years from his ban are complete and will work through the final two years under suspension, on the condition that he commits no further breach of the Code of Conduct throughout that period and participates in an anti-corruption education program under the PCB. The apology is not expected to have any immediate implications but Asif will have to undergo rehabilitation and present the whole truth to the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) and PCB.

"I am following the ICC program and will share all sufficient information with the ICC," Asif said.

Asif was among three players involved in the spot-fixing scandal, along with the former captain Salman Butt and the fast bowler Mohammad Amir. Amir was given a five-year ban and Butt was slapped a 10-year (five year suspended) ban from any involvement in cricketing activities. The trio have apologised for their part with Amir having already completed his rehabilitation program while Butt and Asif are set to go through the program.

The PCB will investigate the information shared by Asif during the meeting before chalking out a rehabilitation program for him. "He met with the PCB chairman and the vigilance and anti-corruption unit," a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. "It was a basic meeting after he voluntarily made a public apology and was here to share information ahead of his rehabilitation program."

Asif and Salman only found the right path after hearing Richardson speak

Dhair aaaye duroost aaye. He is only revealing everything now as it's the only option he has to save his career. At 30 he should be at the very peak of is career but instead is being pushed around in courts. I doubt his chances of ever making a comeback, should he do so his best days will probably be behind him by then. A potentially great career spoilt by greed and lies, afsos...sadh afsos:(
