ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in a telephone call to the MQM chief Altaf Hussain on Sunday inquired about his health and said that MQM is a political reality and a public strength, DawnNews reported.

Hussain thanked the prime minister for inquiring about his health and told Gilani that his efforts to promote democracy and to stabilise the democratic institutions will yield positive results.
“Together we will nurture the plant of democracy,” said Hussain.

Gilani said the government believes in national reconciliation and dialogue with all political forces. Gilani said he respects the public mandate given to the MQM.

Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik also phoned Altaf Hussain and congratulated him on his early recovery.

Talking to Rehman Malik, the MQM chief said his party will foil all conspiracies against democracy with the cooperation of all pro- democracy entities.

Moreover, former law minister Babar Awan accompanied by Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah arrived at the Governor House in Karachi late Sunday to hold a meeting with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and deliver President Asif Ali Zardari’s message.

Sources claimed that Dr Ishratul Ibad has assured the federation that MQM will rejoin the government within 48 hours and has given the green signal to his party.

MQM will be given ministry of Industry & Commerce, Works & Services, Health, Forests, Planning & Development including other ministries, claimed sources.

KARACHI: MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and President Asif Ali Zardari in a telephonic conversation agreed to play their role in the progress and prosperity of the country besides strengthening of the democracy, Geo News reported.

According to MQM Spokesman, the telephonic conversation was held in a cordial environment and lasted for 45 minutes.

Earlier, another round of talks between Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and the PPP team was held here on Sunday night at the Governor’s House to strike a deal regarding the MQMs return to the government.

Former law minister Babar Awan headed the PPP team and Sindh Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani accompanied him as a member. The talks continued for more than two hours and the governor briefed the visitors about the outcome of his talks with Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, held on Saturday.

The sources claimed that the issue of portfolios for the MQM ministers also came under discussion. Insiders claimed that the talks were held in a friendly atmosphere. The Sindh governor conveyed to the PPP team a message of the MQM leadership regarding the ongoing political situation and operation in Karachi.

Ebad has remained in constant contact with Interior Minister Rehman Malik and the Sindh chief minister on the issue, and the inclusion of Siraj Durrani in the talks on Sunday was the result of these negotiations. The sources said that the Presidency directed Agha Siraj to join the talks on Sunday as the MQM wanted some assurances from the local government minister.

The officials refused to share about the outcome of the meeting but confirmed that more talks would be held in the coming days to resolve the issue and address demands of the MQM for rejoining the government. The insiders claimed that some minor issues were resolved while some major issues still needed to be addressed.

PPP-MQM negotiations: No talks yet, but plenty of conversation

Published: September 4, 2011

" It was a political manoeuvre to attract public attention and to create a new agenda for the media to discuss," MQM sources, on talks with PPP.

KARACHI: While the much awaited talks between the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement failed to materialise on Sunday, PPP leaders continued their long-drawn out wooing of their estranged allies with both Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Interior Minister Rehman Malik making it a point to call MQM chief Altaf Hussain on his return from a hospital in London.

Contrary to reports that circulated in virtually the entire media on Saturday, there were no talks held between the PPP and the MQM on Sunday, and none appear to have been scheduled at all. There was no mention of even a future date for a meeting until the filing of this story, according to sources familiar with the situation.

According to statements released by the MQM, the party chief has returned to his London home after having recovered from his as yet undisclosed illness. Hussain had earlier been admitted to a hospital because of his condition, though the party has not yet said what he suffered from nor said how serious it was. The statement said that the MQM chief had been advised ‘complete rest’ by his doctors.

In what appears to be a bid to reassure his supporters, the MQM leader gave a speech on Sunday to the party’s central coordination committee, which had gathered to hear Hussain via telephone at Nine Zero, the MQM’s party headquarters in Karachi.

Once he had returned home, he was telephoned by the prime minister and the interior minister. Statements released by the party about those conversations suggest that little more than Hussain’s health was discussed as the leaders from both parties exchanged pleasantries.

Hussain, did, however, state that the MQM was a ‘democracy-loving’ party and would ‘foil all designs’ against democracy in Pakistan, leading some observers to believe that this was a veiled reference by the MQM chief towards talk of a military operation that has been circulating in the media.

Prime Minister Gilani, however, seemed more explicit in his desire for the MQM to rejoin the ruling coalition, saying that the popularity of the MQM was ‘a political reality’.

‘Pressure tactics’

Meanwhile, sources close to the MQM claimed that the reports of a scheduled meeting between the MQM and the PPP had been deliberately circulated by the PPP leadership in order to pressure the MQM through the media.

“It was a political manoeuvre to attract public attention and to create a new agenda for the media to discuss,” said one source, adding that the MQM had not been formally informed of the date for the talks.

Both the spokesperson of the Sindh government and the MQM denied on Sunday that any talks had been scheduled.

The MQM sources, did, however, give broad hints about what it would take for the party to begin talks on rejoining the ruling coalition for the third time since the February 2008 elections.

“If they (PPP) want the MQM return to the coalition government, they should come to the MQM with a clear mind and assurances that they (PPP) would show respect to the public mandate of the MQM,” said the sources.

The source hinted that the MQM considered former Sindh senior minister Zulfiqar Mirza’s allegations against the party to be a game-changer and would require more concessions from the PPP before rejoining the government.

LOL! Easy man, the same media outlets have been yelling about MQM rejoining the government for the past 6 weeks.

No doubt they will rejoin but the question is when and how...

No, the question is why? If MQM don't get the ministries they want then they start killing people. Whenever someone exposes MQM they challenges their creditability. This proves that Dawn News is creditable and MQM is negotiating with govt. to come back since at-least last 6 weeks.

Its not about the ministries, never was. Its about the recent round of controversies with MQM, be it Imran Farooq case or Zulfiqar Mirza, all have one common purpose, to get MQM back in government. The ministries MQM gets this time will be fewer than they had last time and all major ministries MQM had have already been given to PML-Q and F

Exposes MQM? Of course Dawn is credible, I was just remarking on the fact that every week every media outlet carries news of MQMs impending return. They are all stating the same thing, we will see when they join.
