Hindus policy and Hindu lot is strange . Historically they were fragmented , in disarray and usually inward looking . If you do not mind caste prejudice , if you do not mind widow burning ,if you do not object to ban on widow remarriage which led to downward caste reclassification , if you do not mind their being tied to a superstitious life and horoscopes , their child marriage ,their idols including those of phalluses , then you can regard them otherwise as a civilized lot .
Hindu family structure is strong , sons are more under thumb of fathers than Muslim families . But political conduct of Hindus during partition was really strange , on one hand Nehru congress wanted no pakistan and save india as one unit , but on ground Hindu families were sending their youngsters enmasse to India before partition , then even after partition according to Azad ,it seemed that Patel had no interest in saving Muslims within India , only Gandhi and Mountbatten had some interest in stopping pogroms and slaughter.
It appears to me that Nehru was looking was a dynasty rule and did not want either any reconciliation with Muslims which might endanger his dynasty of PM ship , nor was he averse to quiet ethnic cleansing but superficially he was nice to muslims .
Regarding kashmir there were several factors which caused problem , Muslim league was not well entrenched , Kashmiris were led to believe they can be independent ,and man called sheikh Abdullah called himself another Quaid E Azam . This was against logic , here was a Muslim dominated state which could not get rid of a Rajah dynasty in 100 years and now it was dreaming of getting rid of great Hindu and Muslim federations of the larger India . Kashmiri's greatest enemy is self confidence with no basis on ground .
If today Pakistani federation were to wound up , Indians will buy local kashmiris out in a few decades and will physically change local Muslim ratio like China did in Xingian when Pakistan was busied with India in 1964 by Bhutto .
The attitude of India towards Pakistan would be much unfriendlier if Saudia and GCC regimes were not there , similar Kashmiris will be no where if Pakistan disintegrates ever and is not replaced by a strong nuclear Punjab military state either .
On a personal level Hindus of today are not the same as those of fifty years back , during our parents time they would not miss an oppertunity to oppose Muslim rise ,individually or nationally but even then personal friendships existed .
Modi is trying to be another complicated Nehru , obliging , soft , razor sharp , risk taker but he is underestimating Pakistani power like his Nehru .
