Mercedes-Benz calls its G-wagen an automotive icon, which is roughly translated as ancient and ossified but the toolings paid for. Will it still be around in 13 years? Probably not, but that didnt stop Mercedes designing a version of it for a competition to design the Californian Police Departments Highway Patrol Vehicle of 2025.
This posits a sort of post apocalypse world where there dont appear to be any highways so the Concept Ener-G-Force is a super aggressive SUV, powered with a fuel-cell engine for which it gathers water in roof tanks which is then "hydro-converted" (i.e. by electrolysis) into hydrogen fuel on board.
The whole concept gets a bit squirrely when you start asking tough question about the driveline, but we understand the concept uses four-wheel hub motors and has lithium-ion battery storage in the side skirts. The range is claimed to be about 500 miles and the concept uses a complex "terra-scan" radar on the roof to identify the terrain and adapt the chassis settings to suit. Now that is a serious idea and we know that Land Rover is working on just such a system
