KARACHI, March 20, 2015: Mr. Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) visited NAB Karachi Bureau to review performance of NAB Regional Bureau. Director General NAB Karachi Lt. Col (R) Siraj–ul-Naeem along with his team briefed Chairman NAB about the current status of Steel Mills, ISAF and National Bank of Pakistan’s cases as investigations in these cases underway in NAB Karachi. The Chairman NAB said that NAB Karachi is dealing with important cases. It plays a prominent role in contributing towards the overall performance of NAB. NAB Karachi disposed off 3589 complaints, 327 Complaint Verifications (CVs), completed 71 inquiries and finished 33 investigations, arrested 70 people and recovered a total Rs. 1.432 billion through VR, PB and indirect recoveries during 2014. The chairman was informed that NAB Karachi is currently investigating 311 cases, in which 231 cases are at inquiry stage and 80 cases are under investigation. 25 people have been arrested in the first quarter of 2015 and recoveries made so far during the first quarter of 2015 are 299.314 million in addition to recovery of 71. 38 Acres land valuing Rs. 360 million through Voluntary Return (VR) due to NAB Karachi efforts. DG, NAB Karachi also highlighted the strengths and weakness of NAB Karachi Regional Bureau DG NAB Karachi informed that in 10 cases of Pakistan Steel Mills transferred from FIA to NAB, 8 supplementary references have been filed. Inquiries of 5 cases of Pakistan Steel Mills have been transferred from FIA to NAB. 4 cases have been converted/linked into investigation and one case in closed. DG informed that 25 complaints regarding 28, 802 commercial and one for 3542 non-commercial containers filed by FBR. NAB filed 57 references in Accountability Courts on FTO report involving 221 clearing agents, 110 border agents, 5 Custom officials and 7918 ISAF containers including 13 references in which Custom Collectorate confirmed non arrival of 627 containers. The trial in ISAF cases is at advance stage. DG NAB Karachi further informed that inquiry regarding recruitment of SEVPs in National Bank of Pakistan was recruited without completion of Codal formalities and misusing Authority. The Chairman NAB appreciated the performance of NAB Karachi and directed to arrest all Proclaimed Offenders and absconders by using all resources and put them behind the bars. He directed that all complaint verifications, inquiries and investigations should be completed transparently, on the basis of evidence on merit under laid down procedures and SOP. The Chairman NAB said NAB believes in zero tolerance against corruption and directed all Officers/Officials of NAB Karachi to work more vigilantly, honestly and diligently in order to curb corruption and corrupt practices from the country. He appreciated the performance of all wings of NAB Karachi under the supervision of its Director General and wished that better results will be produced in the future. He hoped that NAB Karachi will continue to work with same pace and zeal without any fear and favor.
