ISLAMABAD: The Legharis have only one question on their minds nowadays: why they have been stabbed in the back by the Chaudhrys of Gujrat, for how else could they comprehend the fact that the Leghari scion, Senator Jamal Legharis name was missing from the nine-member list of the committee chairmen submitted by the PML-Q leadership, all of whom were made chairmen of Senate standing committees from the party quota. And to think that the Legharis had also stood by the Chaudhrys in the latest challenge to their leadership by the Humayun Akhtar-Salim Saifullah camp.
Theirs has indeed been a strange love-hate relationship since 2002 when the promised elevation of Farooq Khan Leghari to the office of prime minister was strongly opposed by the Chaudhrys. But thanks to the strange ways of politics, the two political families have been forced into working together on the same side of the political fence, even if not in each others mutual interest. Pervez Elahi, during his tenure as CM Punjab, trumped the Leghari family by promoting their opponents in the area and also succeeded in getting Jamal Khan dethroned as Nazim DGK.
Meanwhile, the name of Senator Jamal Leghari was said to have been dropped at the last moment from the final list of the candidates of the PML-Q for the chairmen standing committees and instead Javed Ali Shah from Shujaabad was accommodated, reportedly on the recommendation of none other than Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. But one source claimed that actually Javed Ali Shah from Multan had joined the PML-Q when Pervez Elahi was the chief minister Punjab, so first he was rewarded with a Senate ticket and now with a slot of chairman Senate body on agriculture.
Political sources claimed that because of their own political compulsions, the Leghari family from the south Punjab had always sided with the Chaudhrys of Gujrat even when Gen (retd) Musharraf was still the president and certain moves were underway to dislodge Ch Shujaat Hussain from the chairmanship of the party.
The sources said Ch Pervez Elahi, on the contrary, had always backed the opponents of the Leghari family in Dera Ghazi Khan when Jamal Khan was the district Nazim DGK. Maqsood Leghari was backed by Ch Pervez Elahi to replace Jamal and finally it was done in the last elections. But, this act of Pervez Elahi did not convince the Leghari family to ditch the Chaudhrys when they found themselves in hot soup at the hands of the rebel group. Reportedly, Farooq Leghari rushed to Lahore all the way from Dera Ghazi Khan to throw his weight behind Chaudhry Shujaat in the latest election battle.
One source said actually the Chaudhrys knew very well that the Leghari family did not have any option in politics except to follow them because they could neither join the PPP nor the PML-N for obvious reasons. This impression was said to have been used by the Chaudhrys to politically blackmail the Legharis.
In this background, the sources said, when the names of PML-Q senators were being finalised for chairmen slots, Jamal Khan Leghari was interested in becoming the chairman Senate body on agriculture as he was advised by his father Farooq Khan Leghari only to accept this slot, so that he could make some difference in the lives of millions of poor farmers by prevailing upon the government at the time of formulation of policies.
Reportedly, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain also promised to accommodate his old friend Farooq Leghari, who did not ditch the party when an unsuccessful revolt was staged by Hamayun Akthar, Saleem Saifulllah, Hamid Nasir Chattha and others to dethrone him. The Leghari family was so wise that it even distanced itself from the politics of Sumeria Malik when she took on the Chaudhrys and created a lot of embarrassment for them.
The sources said, however, these sacrifices of Legharis could not convince the Chaudhrys to pay back in the same coin while making recommendations for the slots. Reportedly, when Jamal went to protest against this omission, a shrewd politician in Shaujaat was said to have told him that he had forgotten his name at the time of finalisation of this list and now he should not press to get the agriculture committee.
Reportedly, this move shocked the Leghari family, as they were not expecting this kind of treatment from their own friends whom they had always bailed out in the past to enable them to retain the chairmanship of the party. The sources said even the elder Leghari was found perturbed over this betrayal, as he asked his son Jamal not to accept anything other than the agriculture ministry committee. But, sources said the Leghari family was told to opt for some other slot instead of the agriculture ministry committee. But, a furious Jamal Khan has so far refused to accept anything else.
The sources said now background efforts were being made to make Jamal Leghari the information secretary of the PML-Q after the resignation of Senator Tariq Azeem. But, so far Jamal Legharis bruised ego over this betrayal is reportedly not allowing him to agree to this alternative conciliatory lollypop.
The sources said after finding Jamal Leghari steadfast in his resolve, he was even told that he should not create any hue and cry and let Javed Ali Shah become the chairman and after some time, Javed Ali Shah would be asked to step down, allowing him take over the charge of the chairman. But, a fuming Jamal was said to have even refused to buy this new inexplicable offer. When this correspondent contacted Senator Jamal Khan Leghari, he refused to make any comment on this development.
