33 held in Kohat for disrupting polling on May 30

KOHAT: The police arrested 33 workers of different political parties the other day as they were nominated in FIRs for allegedly disrupting the voting process during the local government elections held on May 30.
Officials said that the police of Shakardarra, Lachi and Bilitang and polling staff of five polling stations of Dheri Banda had registered cases against 482 supporters of political parties for taking away ballot boxes and making hooliganism. As a result of disturbance, polling had to be suspended several times.
They said that police had warned that the remaining accused should hand themselves over otherwise they would be declared proclaimed offenders. A candidate for tehsil council, Mohammad Amin of Dheri Banda, was also arrested and taken to prison by the police for violating Section 144.
The local election commission officials had already withheld the result in several polling stations of Shakardarra where the candidates took ballot boxes forcibly from the staff and escaped.

Cases have been registered against 482 supporters of political parties

Polling would be held again in these polling stations and in Dheri Banda.
NEW FRUIT MARKET: The traders here have again ignored a warning by the administration that action would be taken against them if they failed to shift to the new government fruit and vegetable market, constructed at a cost of Rs70.65 million.
Despite its inauguration seven years ago, the business community is hesitant to occupy shops in the new market due to its long distance from the main bazaar and unavailability of cold storage facility there.
The commissioner and deputy commissioner had inaugurated the market twice to lure the businessmen to the new place.
Officials told this correspondent that the contractor had escaped to Punjab, leaving the market incomplete, while the tehsil municipal administration was not in a position to complete the project.
ALLEGED EXTORTIONISTS HELD: The police on Monday arrested two alleged extortionists belonging to tribal area for demanding money from businessmen in the name of banned TTP.
A man who had returned from Saudi Arab told the Riaz Khan Shaheed police that he had been receiving anonymous calls to donate Rs1 million for the TTP, otherwise he would be killed. Police said that the complainant’s name was kept secret for security reasons.
The police while tracking the mobile numbers conducted raids at various places and arrested a tribesman, Ibraheem Khan, from new bus stand area and another from Shahpur village, and shifted them to unknown location.
The police registered case against the accused and launched further investigations.

Multi-party conference decides judiciary probe poll rigging

ESHAWAR: In the absence of major opposition parties, the multi-party conference convened by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Tuesday decided to investigate the allegations of mismanagement and rigging in the May 30 local body elections through a judicial commission.
“The provincial government will soon contact the Peshawar High Court for the formation of a judicial commission to probe the alleged irregularities in the local body polls. Every decision of the commission will be acceptable to the government,” the chief minister told reporters after the multi-party conference here.
The conference chaired by the chief minister was attended mostly by ruling parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Jamaat-i-Islami and Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan.
From among the opposition parties, only Qaumi Watan Party as well as Pakistan Muslim League–Quaid, which has no representation in the provincial assembly, attended the meeting.

CM says high court will be contacted to form judicial commission

Leaders of the tripartite alliance consisting of Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl and Pakistan People’s Party didn’t attend the meeting and said they would go ahead with today’s (Wednesday) shutter down strike across the province against the alleged rigging in the local body elections.

Five PTI men arrested after rejection of pre-arrest bail

NOWSHERA: Five local leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, including three councilors-elect, were arrested by the police after their pre-arrest bail petition was dismissed by a local court on Tuesday in a case of an attack on ANP office and damaging property there.
An Additional District and Sessions Judge Jehanzeb Shinwari declined to confirm the pre-arrest bail of the suspects, including two district councillors, Ashfaq Khan and Mohammad Ishfaq alias Kako, a tehsil councillor Sajid Khan alias Sajid Lala, Feroz and Kausar.
The judge observed that at such a preliminary stage their bail couldn’t be confirmed.
The five PTI men would be produced before a judicial magistrate today (Wednesday) for getting their physical custody. The suspects are also likely to file their regular bail petitions today.
The FIR of the occurrence was registered on the complaint of an ANP activist, Sohail Khan, who alleged that PTI activists took out a procession after some of their candidates won the local body polls on May 30, and after passing through different areas converged outside the ANP office in Pabbi. He alleged that PTI activists resorted to firing in the air for over half-an-hour, and also ransacked the ANP office and damaged properties, including his vehicle

The alliance comprises PML-N, ANP, PPP, Qaumi Watan Party, JUI-F and Jamaat-i-Islami.

Speaking at a news conference, they said they had formed their own alliance to decide their future course of action.
