This puts the country at significant risk of crossing the 199-mark officially recorded in 2000, or the 198 seen in 2011. It is a major setback for a country that as recently as 2005 saw only 28 cases in total, with everything seemingly on track for polio eradication. Last year there were93 cases in the country, according to the GPEI.
The worst-affected areas, according to the state minister for the national health service, Saira Afzal Tarar, are the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KP), where militants often prevent vaccination.

Most of Pakistan is polio-free. The country has never interrupted transmission of wild poliovirus. Transmission is intense in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), and periodically spreads to other parts of the country and internationally.


Polio this week in Pakistan

• Twenty one new WPV1 cases were reported in the past week. Of these, 12 are from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) (3 from North Waziristan, 3 from South Waziristan and 6 from Khyber Agency); 4 are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (1 from Tank, 1 from Peshawar and 2 from the previously uninfected district of Bunir); 1 from Kabdulah, Balochistan; 1 in the previously uninfected district of Bhakkar in Punjab; and 3 cases in Sindh (2 in Khigadap and 1 in Khiorangi). This brings the total number of polio cases in 2014 to 166 compared to 28 in 2013 by this date. The most recent onset of paralysis was on 2 September in FATA. The bulk of these cases had onset of paralysis in August, and are being cleared as part of a laboratory back-log.
• One new cVDPV2 case was reported in the past week. This case had onset of paralysis in the Khyber district of FATA on 23 June. The country has now reported 19 cases of cVDPV2 in 2014.
• Immunization activities are continuing with particular focus on known high-risk areas, in particular the newly opened areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. At exit and entry points, 182 permanent vaccination points are being used to reach internally displaced persons.

It is shameful for our nation. It could spread easy as people travel.
You are right there are more in Fata, but KPK is not free from it.
All level of Govt should look at it seriously and through this polio out of our country A.S.A.P

Thats human infected not about sewerage water. To eliminate 100% polio in human take more time. And see Majority cases comes from FATA under Nawaz Sharif and despite 6th time and 7th year of continuous rule there is still human polio cases and polio virus in water too.

I don't agree with your 6 times rules, Polio was never as bad as it has been in past 10 years. NS was not ruling past 15 years.
Any how we should look at it beyond political parties level. Think of it as a Pakistani, not as PTI or PMLN.
You know how it is going to the water. When sick people stools will mix in drinking water, in lakes and in rivers, then everyone will be sick.,

Well I agree we should take this issue as Pakistanis since no one will ask if I am PTI or PML-N when they will ask Polio certificate.

The surge come after polio campaign was used by CIA in IBL operation since many health workers were targeted and also many parents refused to vaccinate the kids.

I think if polio vaccination continued in KPK with same intensity as now within 2 or 3 years polio cases in KPK will drop significantly. Punjab can also eliminate since human cases are few and cleaning up of sewage water can also be done quickly provided Govt. take if seriously. Biggest challenge will be FATA and Federal Govt. has to show seriousness in tackling POLIO in FATA. A single case of polio is threat to all Pakistan
