Major School of Thoughts of Islam and Their Followers

I thought to take the initiative here today and try to enquire about those wishful members of this forum who normally have keen interest in the Islamic Discussion forum of www.siasat.pk site. A similar sort of question, if I’m not mistaken grossly, was tried by Abbasi bhai to float here in this section few days ago but unfortunately due to the ambiguity and doubtful nature of his words majority of the respondents deviated from the concerned topic and later indulged in useless discussions. My whole purpose of creating this thread is to make Abbasi bhai and his other colleague moderators to use it as a reference point so that it might become easier for them to identify the main school of thoughts of Islam and their adherents here on this forum to chalk out the framework of rules and procedures for them to follow strictly when they wish to participate in such religious dialectical debates in the near future.

"Abbasi bhai what I’ve understood the query of your previous post, which has been locked now, was that most probably you tried to enquire about the forum members affiliations and connections with some specific sect / school of thought of Islam or may be you tried to ask them about some of the basic details of their prefered major Islamic Fiqh schools as perceived by them. Brother as far as I’m concerned I was for a long period of time was emotionally connected with the Salafi school of thought and till this day I do admire some of their concepts as well but with a passage of time I have developed some of my differences with their strict frame of mind when it comes to their understanding and rulings on some specific aspects of Islamic doctrines and principles.

Things however changed drastically after 2002-03 for me when I was enrolled for an advance certification course of Islamic Studies in University of London. After the blessings of Allah SWT and one particular individual which changed my thought process and its line of direction to a great extent was one and only the great Imam and Mujadid of the Middle Age era of Islam who’s quote I always attach to my posts as a signature line. The great Imam Al Ghazali Rahimahu Allah SWT was that gigantic scholar of Islam who made me think positively about the mystic aspects of Islam and ever since then from my heart at least I believe in Sufism to a great extent when it comes to the spiritual entity of Islamic faith.

As far as the jurisprudential / fiqhi dimension of Islam is concerned I’m more and less a Non-Muqalid (Not a blind follower of any particular legal school of thought) and I do appreciate the religious cum legal rulings of all the great Sunni founders and main doctors of schools of Fiqh including the Fiqhi Madhab of Imam Jaffar al Saddiq RA of Twelver Usuli faction of Shi’ite Islam. However when it comes to the extreme liking of any particular Imam of Islamic jurisprudence then I usually slant slightly more towards the personalities of Imam Sha’afi and Ma’alik (May Almighty bless their souls and shower His countless blessings upon them)".

For religious study it may require to study in depth the development of Islamic sharia and conclusion about the ideas and thoughts narrated by different scholars but for normal human being as a Muslim every Muslim should believe on one God, Prophet Muhammad the last messenger of God, the Quran as divine book and Basic five believes of Islamic rules. It is not mandatory for a Muslim to know all about the learned scholars or Imams as they have interpreted Islam within the extent of their period of existence which may not be fit as of today. Therefore it is not common Muslim's issue to whom you follow or not but just abide by the Islamic rules prescribed by the Quran and explained by his last prophet.

It’s surprising to see virtually nil response rate here considering the fact that Religious Debate forum attracts one of the most contentious and heated debate among the members who definitely have their associations with their particular Islamic School of thoughts which pertains to the legal (Fiqhi) and theological (Ilm ul Kalam) frontiers mainly. The purpose of creating this thread is to facilitate the decision making process of Moderators team in relation to the futuristic workability of rules and procedures of debates in this particular discussion forum.

Although I do have some idea about the frequency of specific Islamic school of thoughts and their adherents who normally comes here and participate in religious debates but still it would be helpful to know, although to some extent, about the choices and mental inclinations of the interested members of this platform.

Wow, seems like you learned a lesson on the unity of Ummah sitting in the West, of all places!

It's shame nobody replied, I guess the 'unity-mongers' are spurned and 'tafarqa-parast' are cheered on this forum!

Brother Bret Hawk, your diagrammatic representation of the different schools of thought within Muslims is amazing just like many of your other posts. I'd like to know your thoughts on the guidelines for posting religious threads on this forum. I think that this forum should only be used for siasat (politics). But, many brothers and sisters want to have a separate section for religious discussion. This has been giving a headache to the moderators because every now and then, a dispute occurs resulting in the deletion of posts. The moderators are then blamed for different reasons. Carefully analyzing the troubled posts, one comes to the conclusion that there is a particular school of thought that has zero tolerance for all other schools of thought and declares everyone else Kaafir/Mushrik and calls all their acts Shirk / Biddat. I'm not sure what to call these people. I'm also confused about Wahabi/Salafi/Deobandi etc. Not very sure if they are the same or different. Infact, I believe its not really the entire school of thought but rather a few members belonging to this school of thought who possess a lot of hatred towards every other sect that they dont agree with. The member with nickname Pakistan1947 is a classic example of such people.
