The country's exports declined by 3.4 per cent in January 2020 as compared to same month of 2019, due to a number of factors, well-informed sources told Business Recorder.

However, according to provisional foreign trade figures exports during the first seven months July-Jan, 2019-20 recorded a rise of slightly above one percent.

Growth in exports during the first half (July-December) 2019-20 of current fiscal year recorded a growth of over 3 per cent but in July-January growth declined to 1.2 per cent. However, imports during the first seven months of current fiscal year posted a negative growth of 5.84 per cent - $ 26.70 billion from 32.54 billion during the same period of last year.

According to sources, exports in January 2020 have shown a negative growth of 3.4 per cent - in total terms $ 1.96 billion from $ 2.03 billion in corresponding month of last fiscal year, whereas imports registered negative growth of 14.5 per cent - $3.82 billion from $ 4.47 billion.

However, official spokesperson of Commerce Ministry stated that there is 2.2% growth in exports from July-Jan, 2019-20, adding that there are a few reasons for slow growth in January such as liquidity crunch because sales tax refunds have not yet been cleared.

The sources said, a 12-day transporters strike due to increase in fines also contributed to a slowdown in growth as no containers could go to the ports or get loaded; and strike on account of axle load also has a negative impact on exports.

The spokesperson maintained that axle load increased freight and affected competitiveness. In addition, there were lower exports of wheat as compared to last year (due to domestic shortages). However, Commerce Ministry maintains that it has been able to sustain exports because of aggressive efforts on its part.

On January 8, 2020, Commerce Ministry claims it was not in a state of shock but in a state of satisfaction as exports are increasing.

The sources said Ministry of Commerce will analyze the reasons for the decline in exports at a time when there is dire need for export growth.

Exports plummeted during PML-N's tenure. Dar and co also wrecked the economy. It will take some time to completely recover from PML-N’s disastrous and criminal economic mismanagement.

Baloney.

Watch this:

Read this:

The challenges faced by industry have seen Pakistani exports drop from $25bn in 2013 to $22bn in 2017, according to central bank data, stretching Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves and putting further stress on the country's current account deficit.

And this by Atif Mian on Dar's infatuation with keeping dollar at 100 that directly contributed to the current economic crisis:

اگر صرف روپے کی قدر گرانے سے ایکسپورٹ بڑھ سکتیں تو اب کیوں نہیں بڑھ رہیں؟؟ ایکسپورٹ بڑھانے کیلئے نون لیگ نے انرجی کرائسس ختم کیا ، انفراسرٹکچر بہتر کیا اور سیکورٹی صورتحال کو بہتر کیا
Exports grow by 13.74 per cent in 2017-18

You are digressing.

Exports don't increase due to devaluation only. There are other factors at play.

The fact is PML-N failed to increase exports & left it at a level even lower than what they inherited from PPP.

PTI government inherited record twin deficits, which were a direct result of Dar's disastrous economic policy of keeping the Rs artifically overvalued.

Read this by another top economist:

PML-N created surplus energy at exorbitant price without addressing structural issues and improving transmission infrastructure.

Energy/power/Infra contracts at enormous & unaffordable rates, at times double the rates elsewhere, without competitive bidding.

Now, the government has to pay for capacity charges, even when there is not enough demand.

Crunch the numbers and you will see fiscal cost of capacity payments for the much talked about ‘power generation capacity’. Less outages, but the burden of honouring these exorbitant USD denominated commitments is on the common man.

If you want to brag about 10,000 MW production of electricity by PML-N government, then you should not wine about high electricity prices, which again are a direct consequence of high cost of electricity production and capacity charges.

PTI government should stop setting up any more power plants or even invite the private sector to setup new ones. The system is already crumbling under the burden of capacity payments which have dwarfed the line losses. It cannot sustain further capacity additions.

PML-N govt paid circular debt of Rs 480 billion in one go upon assuming power without even following rules and procedures.

A major argument was that the circular debt problem would be resolved for good. Yet, when PML-N's term expired, it left record circular debt:

Ditto for LNG:

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2150319/2-1263mw-lng-plant-cause-losses-worth-rs202b/

PMLN/Dar inherited Net International reserves of NEGATIVE $2.4 bn with a $2.5 bn yearly Current deficit and left the government in 2018 with a NEGATIVE $7 bn Net International reserves and $19.9 billion dollar current account deficit.

As for other mega infrastructure projects by PML-N government, they suffer from same fundamental flaw that is hallmark of their economic thinking: financially unsustainable with enormous costs to taxpayers, which are in many cases unnecessary.

Just look at Orange Train, for example:

Not to mention, irreparable damage and envrionmental costs of PML-N's infrastructure projects that have wreaked havoc on lives of citizens. They built coal plants on imported coal from China. That too on fertile agricultural land in Sahiwal.

''Villagers say the power plant has impacted not only their health, but uprooted the life they once knew. They remember the time when they were surrounded by green fields as far as the eye could see. They remember what it felt like to breathe fresh air. And they remember the sense of ownership they felt towards their land. For residents like Siddique this loss of ownership was literal. One day, government officials approached him with an offer to acquire his agricultural land to build the power plant. Soon he learnt that refusing this offer was not an option''.
