Dangers of Shale Gas Extration (Fracking)

The extraction and use of shale gas can affect the environment through the leaking of extraction chemicals and waste into water supplies, the leaking of greenhouse gases during extraction, and the pollution caused by the improper processing of natural gas. A challenge to preventing pollution is that shale gas extractions varies widely in this regard, even between different wells in the same project; the processes that reduce pollution sufficiently in one extraction may not be enough in another.

Chemicals are added to the water to facilitate the underground fracturing process that releases natural gas. Fracturing fluid is primarily water and approximately 0.5% chemical additives (friction reducer, agents countering rust, agents killing microorganism). Since (depending on the size of the area) millions of liters of water are used, this means that hundreds of thousands liters of chemicals are often injected into the subsurface. About 50% to 70% of the injected volume of contaminated water is recovered and stored in above-ground ponds to await removal by tanker. The remaining volume remains in the subsurface; hydraulic fracturing opponents fear that it can lead to contamination of groundwater aquifers, though the industry deems this "highly unlikely". However the wastewater from such operations often lead to foul-smelling odors and heavy metals contaminating the local water supply above-ground.

فکر نہیں کریں پاکستان میں بھی یہ برائی جلد شروع ہونے والی ہے

Pakistan is not going to extract any kind of Gas or Oil at least not in Noon league govt. they don't have balls for that

have u ever wonder the biggest culprit in the world to affect green house gases is USA Where u happen to live and CHINA.

how much US spent on IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN WAR ? if even 1/10 of it was spent for the economic uplift of those countries, USA would have been much better of economically, politically and morally. They are still polluting the world in spite of their economic might.PAkistan and other countries are told to stay away from such product because of the adverse affects it has.

Well, hydraulic fracturing or "Fracking" is now an age old technique which is not only used in extraction of shale gas, but also in the extraction of natural gas and oil.

The waster water from oil and gas extraction (including coal bed methane and shale gas) is the biggest waste stream the oil and gas extraction industry produces. This waste water is technically known as "Produced Water".

The environmental compliance laws in different countries impose different standards and laws for the disposal of this "Produced water". Most common among them are :

1- Re-injection into the wells on the site
2- Offsite trucking to be injected into the ground at a different site
3- Discharge after treatment.

And besides many high tech water treatment technologies available and used by Oil and Gas companies, these days, another very simple and environmentally friendly technology has been introduced in the field, known as the "Wetland" technology which uses the biodegradation process to deal with the residual waste and uses carbon sequestration to balance out the total carbon effect in the environment by converting it into biomass. One such example is set forth by Bauer at NIMR oilfields in Oman. This technology is gaining popularity pretty fast. As far as the Shale gas produced water is concerned, this technology seems to integrate seamlessly with it, getting the purification efficiency up to 99.7%
