The life of Asif Raza, a commerce graduate, suddenly changed two years ago when he got an interview call.

While excited at the prospect of a job, he tried not to pay attention to questions at the back of his mind about the source of the call: the Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCO).The Chinese construction and engineering company that is designing and building generation and transmission infrastructure in Pakistan.

“I was not much excited after the call because I did not have any reference or backing to get a job,” the 31-year-old told Xinhua recently referring to the culture of graft and favours when handing out jobs in the country. “But I went for the interview anyway, considering that this is a Chinese company and would definitely select employees on merit,” he added.A week after the interview, Raza managed to land a job as an assistant manager of a department at the Sahiwal Coal Power Plant — designed and constructed by the company.

“It was a pleasant surprise for me to get the job. It brought stability to my life, and now I am very happy and satisfied with my career,” Raza said, adding that it had also increased his trust in China.

Jointly developed by SEPCO and Shandong Ruyi Technology Group Co., the 1,320 megawatt Sahiwal Coal Power Plant started production in May last year.It is the first major energy project which uses the latest, environment-friendly, supercritical technology under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It had been completed and started full operations in a record time for Pakistan.
Apart from powering thousands of houses, the Sahiwal power plant has also provided direct jobs to over 3,000 locals in different fields, including engineers, technicians, supervisors and labourers, during its construction period.

Like Raza, thousands of Pakistanis have found work as China unleashed a flood of projects — large and small — under the multi-billion-dollar CPEC, a comprehensive package of cooperative initiatives and projects encompassing regional connectivity, information network infrastructure, energy cooperation, industries, agricultural development, poverty alleviation, tourism and financial cooperation.

Planning and Development Ministry’s Spokesperson Asim Khan said that over 30,000 people have so far been employed in different projects under the CPEC which will bring more and more tangible benefits to local workers in the coming days.Chinese Deputy Head of Mission Zhao Lijian, who was recently named as the focal person on CPEC power projects, told Xinhua that around 60,000 Pakistanis are working on different Chinese projects in Pakistan, including those under the CPEC.

Fawad Khalid Khan, a senior engineer working with the China National Electric Engineering Company as a deputy commercial manager in Pakistan, believes that at least 100,000 jobs will be created over the next few years under the power and infrastructure projects of CPEC alone.Lijian confirmed that Chinese government has received feasibility reports for special economic zones and that Beijing was currently evaluating it, adding that it will take some time to set up the special economic zones.

China’s investment of billions of US dollars in Pakistan has also brought good fortune for residents of Gwadar, once a sleepy fishing town located on the shores of the Arabian Sea next to the Pakistan-Iran border.Mohammad Nazeer, who had been jobless for years in the town too now has a regular job.

“My years-long hunt for job and sufferings ended in July last year after I was appointed by the Chinese as an assistant supervisor at the Gwadar Port,” Nazeer told Xinhua via telephone, adding “my life has changed after getting a job.”Last year, China Communications Construction Company Chairman Liu Qitao had said that development at Gwadar had created as many as 20,000 direct and indirect jobs to locals. CPEC Maryam jahaiz main nahi le k aayi thi, the project has gone for years and we are getting benefit of the location but yes credit goes to PMLN government for taking it to next phase. Just to let you know China is doing similar projects with Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal etc so this is part of China's strategy.

No one plays politics on CPEC as most of our neighbors are hell bent on damaging it. If anything PMLN government has mishandled the whole project by keeping details secret.

Just think about it:

Nawaz Sharif says his whole business empire is due to their knowledge of STEEL business and they have apparently made millions of dollars from this business but they couldn't use that knowledge to save Pakistan steel mill??

We have another PM Abbasi who runs his own airline business successfully but thinking about selling PIA because it's not profitable?

Ye inki zahaanat hai Mashallah!

What a joke: example of two local people extrapolated to "thousands" of jobs.

Background:

Plans for a corridor stretching from the Chinese border to Pakistan's deep water ports on the Arabian Sea date back to the 1950s, and motivated construction of the Karakoram Highway beginning in 1959.[30] Chinese interest in Pakistan's deep-water harbour at Gwadar had been rekindled by 1998 and in 2002 China began construction at Gwadar port which was completed in 2006. Expansion of Gwadar Port then ceased thereafter owing to political instability in Pakistan following the fall of General Pervez Musharraf and subsequent conflict between the Pakistani state and Taliban militants.[31]

A blockade of the Strait of Malacca by the United States and its allies would cut China off from Middle East oil supplies and from its "Second Continent" Africa. That's why China is shoring up Sri Lanka's major ports and working feverishly with Pakistan to build an alternative route to Middle East and Africa: the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor.[32]

The current form of the project was first proposed by Pakistan Peoples Party. Asif Ali Zardari invited heads of all the political parties to a Luncheon in honour of the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on 22 May 2013.[33] Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari have agreed to build an economic corridor between the two countries. Both sides have decided to further enhance mutual connectivity and both sides are connected to develop the long term plan for a China-Pakistan economic corridor.[33] President Asif Ali Zardari and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang witnessed the signing ceremony as the representatives of the two countries inked the documents at a ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. The visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang marked the signing of important documents aimed at long-term cooperation between the two countries in multiple areas.

Back up your claim by listing where these "thousands" of jobs were created (zones, areas, cities), what kind of jobs and how many people benefited, their skill set etc. (breakdown in real numbers). If you don't have the answers then send us the picture of your economic choo-choo train chugging along the tracks on your hobby table.
