KARACHI, June 6: A senior worker of the Pakistan People`s Party was shot dead in the Lyari area on Monday, police said.
He was among the 54 political prisoners released and sent into exile by the General Zia military regime in swap for hostages following the hijacking of a PIA aircraft in 1981, they added.
Faiz Muhammad Brohi, who was in his late fifties, sustained a fatal bullet wound in his Singo Lane home.
Party sources said he had lately moved to Defence.
Multiple accounts of witnesses made it difficult for investigators to establish the exact series of events that led to the killing.
“A few people said that he was attacked near his old home in Street No 3 of Singo Lane,” said an official at the Chakiwara police station.
“Some accounts suggested that he was fired upon by one of his guests when he was meeting them inside the Singo Lane house. Investigations are under way to establish the way the murder was executed.”
A case (FIR 104/2011) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified persons on a complaint of the victim`s son, Khalid Brohi.
The police, however, remained clueless about the motive and the people behind the murder.
Mr Brohi was a senior activist of the PPP and led a eventful political life.
Sources in the PPP said that the victim was among hundreds of party workers held during General Zia`s dictatorial rule.
However, he was released along with his 53 aides as a result of one of the few successful plane hijackings in world history.
In March 1981, members of a now disbanded militant group `Al-Zulfikar` hijacked a PIA flight from Karachi and diverted it to Kabul. The hijacking episode went on for 13 days and ended in Damascus only when the military rulers released 54 political prisoners.
Sohail Abidi, the deputy information secretary of the PPP`s Karachi division, confirmed Mr Brohi`s political history and said that he returned to Pakistan after spending nine years in Libya and Syria.
“He was a senior party member and his killing is a matter of concern for us. However, it would be a little too early to arrive at any conclusion about his assassination.”

KARACHI, June 6: A young man and his nine-year-old nephew were gunned down in Lyari on Monday, hours before a relative of theirs coming to attend their funeral from Balochistan was shot dead in Pak Colony, police said, blaming rivalry between criminal gangs for the tragic incidents.
Officials said four gunmen on two motorbikes attacked 35-year-old Zahid Magsi near Bakra Piri when he was getting into a rickshaw with his nine-year-old nephew Faiz Muhammad Magsi. Residents of Pak Colony, Zahid picked up Faiz every evening in Lyari where he came to get tuition.
“Two of the riders were seen getting off the motorbike and firing at the victims before speeding away from the scene,” said Inspector Babar Hameed, the SHO of the Kalakot police station. “Both sustained multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. The bodies were later shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.”
He said Zahid, a grave-digger, was a known associate of one of the gangs operating in the neighbourhood.
Fear and tension returned to the strife-hit town on the heels of the dual killings, forcing the traders to pull down shutters. The area that is known to remain open till late in the night began to get deserted and by sunset all major business centres and area shops were closed.
“Apparently the killings are a result of the gangs` rivalry,” said Iqbal Mehmood, the DIG (south). “The dead, Zahid, was found to be a member of a gang and was attacked by its rivals. He was the resident of Pak Colony and targeted by opponents in their stronghold.”
He said the police had reason to believe that a particular group was behind the murders and efforts were being made to trace and arrest the suspects.
“We have enhanced patrolling in the area and immediate measures have been taken to tackle any violent situation,” said DIG Mehmood, adding that the Rangers were also assisting the area police.
The police authorities, who blamed the Bilal and Sheru groups for the killings, could not trace and arrest the suspects till late night though the gunmen struck again within a couple of hours. This time the armed riders killed 45-year-old Abdul Latif and left his woman relative injured as they were coming to attend Zahid`s and his nephew`s funeral in Pak Colony.
“Latif was driving a car to Zahid`s home when he was intercepted by four men on two motorbikes near the Mewa Shah graveyard,” said an official at the Pak Colony police station. “He somehow sensed the approaching danger and sped from the scene but the motorcycle riders fired at the moving car and a bullet hit him in the head that proved fatal.”
The firing also left his 35-year-old relative Razia Bano injured. She was later rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment, where she was declared stable after initial treatment.
“The victims were coming from Vinder in Balochistan to attend the funeral of Zahid and his nephew. They might have been targeted by the same attackers who had earlier killed the two in Lyari,” added the official.

Ambush: Presidents security officer emerges unhurt in armed attack

At least 15 armed men ambushed Bilal Sheikh, the security officer of President Asif Ali Zardari, at 2:15 am on Sunday. He was unhurt but two of his police guards were injured.
Sheikh was returning to his house from Bilawal House, Clifton. The 15 men in two cars and motorcycles attacked him close to his house in Firdous Colony.
My gunman and driver were also in my car while fifteen police guards were in three mobile units behind me, Sheikh told The Express Tribune.
He said the culprits fired at least two rockets and they also hurled hand grenades at his car. The rockets and grenades hit my vehicle and the police mobiles. They also opened fire. The security officer said he remained safe as the guards fired back. One of the suspects was also injured in the crossfire along with Sheikhs two guards. The two police guards, Sarfaraz and Mehmood, were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where their condition was declared stable. They escaped but they left their white Toyota Corolla and some ammunition behind, Sheikh said. They also took their injured companion with them.
He named Lyari gangsters as the suspects. Recently, I was being threatened by Lyari gangsters belonging to the Uzair Baloch group. They wanted to create [some sort of] controversy between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement to disrupt the citys law and order situation, he explained.
Two of Uzair Balochs aides, Shahid Dikkat and Ahsan Mohajir, were leading the attackers and they are the commanders of the Haji Mureed Goth close to Firdous Colony.
After receiving the threats, he had informed Sindh Inspector General of Police Fayyaz Leghari and asked him for protection after which, he was provided the police guards with the three mobiles.
An FIR has been registered against Lyari gangsters under sections 147, 148, 149, 353, 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code and 7 of the Anti Terrorism Act on the complaint of Gulbahar police head constable Shahnawaz.
Following the incident, the police formed an investigation team headed by Anti-Extremist Cell chief SSP Chaudhry Aslam Khan and the team has started raiding areas.
When asked if the attack could be related to a property dispute, Bilal Shaikh said, I am a security officer of the president and I am mostly in Islamabad. I have no business of property here or anything else.
The Gulbahar police have impounded the car. Police said that it was snatched from Gulshan-e-Iqbal two days before the incident and the police have recorded the owners statement. A rocket launcher, one hand grenade and one TT pistol as well as 250 empty shells were also seized from the crime scene.
Investigators have also recorded the statements of witnesses.
