AUCTION OF 3G/4G LICENCES URGED

KARACHI : Speakers at the sixth annual Pakistan Telecommunications Conference 2013 (TeleCON 2013) have urged upon the government to speed up deployment of next generation technol ogies – including the third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G).

“The government should auction the licence for 3G in three to four months instead in one year the government announced yesterday,” Jehan Ara, president of Pakistan Software Houses Association, said, adding that Pakistan is capable of implementing 3G and 4G technologies any time since it has developed a number of applications for the technology.

She said that the government should not delay the auction. The implementation of technologies will attract huge business. Education and health will be the top sectors of the economy – which will benefit immediately from 3G and 4G, she added.

Furqan Qureshi, senior executive vice president of Pakistan Telecommunication Company, said: “Whatever the problems have been, we need to leave the past behind and move on. We have an opportunity here so let’s take the next steps for the benefit of people of Pakistan .”

He said that the government could harness 4G – which is capable of processing huge data – to document the economy.

Salman Ansari, ex-advisor to the ministry of IT and Telecommunication, said that the government should not auction the licence of 3G and 4G with the objective of generating funds, but it should be done to promote modern technology in the country.

Javed Jabbar, former minister and senator, observed that it was important for the ‘new wave’ of IT and telecom to have an impact on governance far and wide.

Speakers said that the government should now arrange first the auction for 4G licence. “The 3G technology has been outdated worldwide,” said a speaker.

They said cloud computing is all about building a shared pool of configurable computing resources – network, servers, storage, applications and services. Earlier Menin Rodrigues, chairman of TeleCON 2013, welcomed the delegates, saying that the industry had shown remarkable performance and created some truly empowering products – which indeed changed and reshaped lives in Pakistan .

3G is outdated. 4G is the way forward but the way it will work is to get kickbacks for 3G then bring 4G by then world standard may be 6G!!

3G technologies allow mobile operators to offer more service options to their users, including mobile broadband. 3G enables devices such as mobile phones and mobile dongles to deliver broadband-speed internet.

3g is not bad. You can still stream live tv and movies on mobile and PC.
And rest of world is converting to 4g but long way to go. In Uk only few cities have 4g provided by only 1 company. Other companies will join end of this year.

The 3G cannot be skipped. There are a lot of handset available in Pakistan that can support 3G. In technical terms, 3G cost per bit to the operators is much lower compared to that of 2G. So, they would love to migrate to 3G to offer voice and data over 3G networks at least in the big cities. Once, your traffic trend start to shift to 3G, 4G (LTE) can be deployed. LTE will take longer time, but the market does have potential for that. However, handsets are quite expensive for LTE, and the voice options for LTE are not good. Hope this clarifies some questions.

Why in Gods name do you want to implement 3G, I have used 3G for many years and I can say that 4G allows transfer of data at higher speed. I live near a 3G mast and yet suffer from poor buffering when watching a YouTube video same goes for VOIP. You have to resort to using WiFi which is not as widely available when you are out and about. 4G is the way forward it has been tested by many companies who believe it will be beneficial for them.
