Abused or not, women are not goddesses

Praneta Jha, Hindustantimes.com
New Delhi, September 10, 2013

India is a country where we worship women as goddesses and yet burn them for dowry and kill girls in the womb. How many times have you heard such an observation?
In my experience, almost as many times as that other hackneyed statement: India is the land of Kama Sutra and yet we are so repressed and prudish when it comes to sex. Neither of these oft-quoted insights has helped change anything. So, when I first read about the Abused Goddesses campaign against domestic violence on Facebook, even before seeing the pictures, I thought the concept was trite.

The pictures, in themselves, are striking. Shot in the style of popular calendar art, they depict Lakshmi, Durga and Saraswati in traditional poses with cuts and bruises on their conventionally beautiful faces.

This campaign has caught the attention of the international media, and is being hailed as ‘powerful’ and ‘hard-hitting’. It has also triggered a debate in social media circles. While some are praising the ‘impact’ of the images, others are uncomfortable because it harks back to the old stereotype of women as ‘goddesses’ and uses the iconography of Hindu mythology to represent domestic violence survivors who cut across the lines of religion, caste and class in our country.

To begin with, I do not even find it powerful or hard-hitting as a campaign against domestic violence. A staunchly religious middle-class Hindu man might recite the Durga chalisa every day and yet beat up his wife for talking back at him. Will this campaign make him stop and think about Durga Ma the next time he raises his hand or belt towards his wife?

“Pray that we never see this day. Today more than 68% of women in India are victims of domestic violence. Tomorrow it seems like no woman shall be spared. Not even the ones we pray to,” says the text in the ads.

But goddesses that “we pray to” do not get slapped, belted, punched and kicked around into subservience and ‘domestication’. Women do.

What is the underlying message this campaign is trying to convey anyway? Do not hit women because they are goddesses? Are women worthy of respect and humane treatment because goddesses are worshipped? What about the women who do not display the presumed qualities of a revered goddess?

Pedestalisation of women as goddesses is as damaging as portraying them as sex objects. Both dehumanise women. Both leave no space in between for women to exercise their will or have feelings and opinions and flaws and desires as human beings. Trapping women into images of a supposed ideal is one of the oldest strategies of patriarchy – and if we do not fit the image, it is deemed alright to ‘punish’ and violate us.

One might argue that advertising uses stereotypes to achieve a connect with the masses. But it also insidiously reinforces those stereotypes.

Talking of hard-hitting campaigns, a 2009 anti-domestic violence ad made in the UK and featuring Keira Knightley comes to mind. It shows the actress come back from a shoot to be assaulted by a jealous lover at home. Now, this is hard-hitting, because it feels real – even as the camera pans out to show that it is taking place on a deserted film set with Knightley helplessly shouting ‘cut’ while she is kicked in the stomach.

Women are not goddesses, Hindu or otherwise. Domestic violence is a reality that affects human beings. It will not be eradicated by pushing it into the realm of abstraction.

That is right. The plight of women in India is getting worse by the micro second and that is ONLY because of the Indian male who looks at the female as a used toilet paper to be discarded upon use.

We would urge the males and appeal to them to start respecting the women that bears you in the womb, nurtures you are young and then supports you as a wife.

Playing blame games is not going to help you. Pakistans message of peace and love as always :)

There is a very small tiny minority of people(living in India) who are involved in such acts. Majority of Indians are law abiding citizen.

While on this forum, I have seen majority pakistanis behaving as moral police men; acting as guardian of all pakistani women :)

How many of the Indians are seen here abusing on posts which is rampant among pakistani members!!
Remember that: Indians are taking this crisis head on & all these criminals will be exposed with in matter of time. While in Pakistan, no crime will ever be noticed until, you impregnate 250 women!!

Sure very small tiny minority of people!
But we have create shelter homes all over India.
Women-unfriendly shelter homes abound in Kerala Reema Narendran | Posted on Jun 08, 2011 at 05:03pm IST Share THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Why should women's shelter homes have cooks or sweepers? While the inmates of all other shelter homes in the state have food cooked and floor swept for them, the traditional gendered notion that makes cooking and sweeping the responsibility of women is at work in the government run Mahila Mandirams, where the posts of cooks and sweepers are nonexistent. The inmates of these women's shelter homes are expected to do all the work, whether or not they are physically or mentally fit to do the work. A Women's Commission study has found that the Mahila Mandirams in the state, conceived as a shelter home for battered and destitute women, are not just women-unfriendly, but often runs in the style of a correctional home or even a women prison. The study said that the notion about safety aspects often restricts the basic rights of women, affecting dignity of life. The difficulties begin right at the gate, when any woman seeking shelter is asked to get a court order to get admission to these short stay homes. "An aggrieved woman or a victim of domestic violence can't be expected to go through the labyrinthine procedures for getting a court order in her already traumatic condition. The admission procedure definitely has to be made more easier for a woman in need of help," said advocate J Sandhya, who conducted the study for the Commission. While the cooks and sweepers are nonexistent, the post of matrons are often daily wage appointments that takes out the accountability factor, making a serious impact on the quality of work. There are no routine medical services provided to the inmates and when such institutions are far away from the city, the health problems of the inmates are often ignored. The monthly checkup for pregnant women are also given a miss. The two districts of Idukki and Wayanad do not even have Mahila Mandirams. The worst case scenario is that of children who accompany their mothers. These children are separated from their mothers and kept in Children's homes, either in Calicut or Ernakulam, when they attain six years of age. The geographical distance between the mothers and the children creates further anxiety and trauma in both. "It is imperative that the kids be allowed to stay with their mothers at least until they attain 12 years of age. Destitute girl children below the age of 18 should have separate homes," said Sandhya. Many women from outside the state are living in absolutely alien conditions in these homes, as not just the language but the food and other habits are very different from their own. Often they are not accepted by other inmates and the staff members are in the dark as to how to handle the situation. "An effective mechanism ought to be in place for tracing the families of these women from other states. They can even be housed together in a single home so that such a system will fall in place," said Sandhya.

If anyone is abusing, raping or sodomizing indians then it is indians themselves. All we do is share news from YOUR media. If a tiny minority is involved then i dont know how you are the RAPE CAPITAL of the WORLD with the UN chief acknowledging you have a National Rape crisis.

DUDE go to any Indian forum and you can see how respectfull you are of others. Your forum's cannot even tolerate adversity in opinions and have specific sections for issues in Pakistan (bigsmile). You have no such issues here...

You can take this fake moral high somewhere else as it doesnt exist !!

You are on our forum so take what you get and dont complain. Otherwise Im sure you know how to land on an Indian or any other forum

When did I not agree to it that tiny fractions of criminals are giving India a bad name. USA faced similar problems in 60/70's.
Indians are pretty much rational, coherent and understand the problems. I don't know about the forums but we come here for free entertainment ;) There are so many jokers here but someone is outrightly beating others in posting errant news.
