Fawad Chaudhry Criticized the Role of Ruet-E-Hilal Committee
The Government Will Take Help from Science for Moon-Sighting
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry announced on Wednesday, that a calendar showing main Islamic dates and months for the next five years based on scientific evidence would be ready and placed before the cabinet by the 15th of Ramazan, thus put an end to the incessant problem over moon-sighting in the country.
The minister said at a press conference “We have tremendous respect for ulema and they may be good at their jobs but these elderly people can barely see people in front of them how they can clearly alone spot a fine crescent,”.
“We cannot understand the stubbornness of the ulema who insist on sighting the moon alone. Moon-sighting is a scientific process. Science can precisely tell the birth of the moon and that is why Imam Shafai described moon-sighting as an arithmetic process,” he said.
Explaining that the telescopes used by Ruet-i-Hilal Committee members were hundreds-of-years-old and outdated and that his office will rely on advanced telescopes of the Met Department.
Anticipating it may be opposed, Fawad says his ministry doesn’t intend to impose its conclusion
Fawad says that his ministry does not intend to impose its conclusions but presenting an alternative option.
“A process for confirmed crescent observations was developed based on indisputable
astronomical information to which nobody should object.,” the minister said.
On 3 May, Mr. Chaudhry formed a committee of five expert professionals from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Meteorological Department and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) to establish a Moon View for key Islamic dates and months scientifically and ending physical search by means of telescopes.
Mr. Chaudhry replied on the question about Ulema warning to the government to keep a distance from religious matters, he answered, "We interpret religious things better than theirs”
Mr. Chaudhry questioned the wisdom of spending large amounts of money every year on moon sighting and said that the moon sighting would voluntarily be carried out by the Committee of the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee.
He criticized the committee and said it was time to use science and technology to stop the controversies over the ages with Rs.3,06 million were spent every year on moon-sighting.
