Americans had no role in Wahabism. It was a man Abdul Wahab, who and his followers, started this thing that why we follow Imams when we have Quran and Hadees. Later people called them Wahabi, based on his name.

Abdulwahab was used as a religious element by AbdulAziz Al Saud (the first king of modern saudi) to unite all tribes in this region under the banner of Islam.
Americans, in order to create rift, branded this as wahabism. this propaganda heated up, 20-30 years later, when King Faisal stopped oil production. This is when they really started this propaganda of Saudis being wahabis and their version is different than others etc to create rift amoung Muslims.
