KARACHI: A latest report prepared by the provincial government vis-à-vis the drought situation in Thar shows that 311 children under five years of age have died between December, 2013 and November this year, it emerged on Sunday.
The report, submitted in the Sindh High Court by the chief secretary after the approval of Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah last week, shows the main causes of death of the children include birth asphyxia, pre-term, low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, delivery of babies through traditional birth attendants (Daais)that caused neo-natal sepsis and diarrhoea.
It classifies the casualties of the same children according to their ages, which shows that 118 children who died were newborn babies (one day age), 82 children died were of age two days to one month, 28 children of age 1.5 months to three months and 29 were those whose age ranged between eight months and one year.
The report, however, says Thar, as regards the under five year death rate, was comparatively better than Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rajanpur, Rahimyarkhan and other neighbouring districts in Punjab. “However the challenges are same.”

At least six infants have died over the last 24 hours in Sindh's Tharparker district due to viral infections and malnutrition, hospital sources told
Dawn.com on Saturday.
The infants breathed their last in Mithi Civil Hospital and other government hospitals in the desert region, raising the toll to 47 this month and more than 155 this year alone, said sources privy to the health department.
The children were admitted to government-run hospitals for medical attention by their parents who complained of lack of facilities, including life-saving drugs.
The parents demanded that proper medical facilities be provided within their respective villages so they are spared the miles-long trip to Mithi town in the desert heat.
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD
Despite repeated attempts, neither the district health officer nor the civil surgeon of Mithi Civil Hospital could be contacted for comment on the unabated deaths of newborns and infants in Thar.
It is pertinent to mention that the local health officials were told
not to share details with the media after the Supreme Court had taken suo motu notice in April last year of the deaths of five children in Mithi Civil Hospital
Health and nutrition experts, including the CEO of Health and Nutrition Development Society (Hands) Shaikh Dr Tanwer Ahmed ─ whose organisation is working for healthcare development in Thar ─ are of the opinion that malnutrition, poverty, frequent droughts and early marriages among Tharis are the prime factors behind the deaths.

HYDERABAD:
As the death spell continues in Tharparkar, two more infants died in Civil Hospital, Mithi, on Saturday taking the toll since December to over 170.
Dr Sahib Dino identified one of the deceased as three-month-old Bhagat Kolhi, whose parents belong to Diplo taluka, and three-month-old Ladaan Bajeer, who died on way to the hospital from Islamkot taluka. At least 68 children are admitted in the hospital’s 40-bed paediatrics ward. “Almost all the children who died at the hospital were brought only when the chances of their survival from the critical illness were very low,” Dr Dino said.
The local people and the civil activists attribute these deaths to the malnutrition in children and in mothers of newborns. However, the health officials link the mortality to illnesses, such as pneumonia and blood infection.
As many as 50 children from Tharparkar were referred to Civil Hospital, Hyderabad, since the beginning of March. According to Dr Nasir Ali at the hospital’s paediatrics ward, eight of them have died while eight others were referred to Karachi. At least 15 of the children are currently admitted.
