KARACHI: A latest report prepared by the provincial government vis-à-vis the drought situation in Thar shows that 311 children under five years of age have died between December, 2013 and November this year, it emerged on Sunday.
The report, submitted in the Sindh High Court by the chief secretary after the approval of Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah last week, shows the main causes of death of the children include birth asphyxia, pre-term, low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, delivery of babies through traditional birth attendants (Daais)that caused neo-natal sepsis and diarrhoea.
It classifies the casualties of the same children according to their ages, which shows that 118 children who died were newborn babies (one day age), 82 children died were of age two days to one month, 28 children of age 1.5 months to three months and 29 were those whose age ranged between eight months and one year.
The report, however, says Thar, as regards the under five year death rate, was comparatively better than Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rajanpur, Rahimyarkhan and other neighbouring districts in Punjab. “However the challenges are same.”

At least six infants have died over the last 24 hours in Sindh's Tharparker district due to viral infections and malnutrition, hospital sources told Dawn.com on Saturday.
The infants breathed their last in Mithi Civil Hospital and other government hospitals in the desert region, raising the toll to 47 this month and more than 155 this year alone, said sources privy to the health department.
The children were admitted to government-run hospitals for medical attention by their parents who complained of lack of facilities, including life-saving drugs.
The parents demanded that proper medical facilities be provided within their respective villages so they are spared the miles-long trip to Mithi town in the desert heat.
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD

Despite repeated attempts, neither the district health officer nor the civil surgeon of Mithi Civil Hospital could be contacted for comment on the unabated deaths of newborns and infants in Thar.
It is pertinent to mention that the local health officials were told not to share details with the media after the Supreme Court had taken suo motu notice in April last year of the deaths of five children in Mithi Civil Hospital
Health and nutrition experts, including the CEO of Health and Nutrition Development Society (Hands) Shaikh Dr Tanwer Ahmed ─ whose organisation is working for healthcare development in Thar ─ are of the opinion that malnutrition, poverty, frequent droughts and early marriages among Tharis are the prime factors behind the deaths.

HYDERABAD:
As the death spell continues in Tharparkar, two more infants died in Civil Hospital, Mithi, on Saturday taking the toll since December to over 170.

Dr Sahib Dino identified one of the deceased as three-month-old Bhagat Kolhi, whose parents belong to Diplo taluka, and three-month-old Ladaan Bajeer, who died on way to the hospital from Islamkot taluka. At least 68 children are admitted in the hospital’s 40-bed paediatrics ward. “Almost all the children who died at the hospital were brought only when the chances of their survival from the critical illness were very low,” Dr Dino said.
The local people and the civil activists attribute these deaths to the malnutrition in children and in mothers of newborns. However, the health officials link the mortality to illnesses, such as pneumonia and blood infection.
As many as 50 children from Tharparkar were referred to Civil Hospital, Hyderabad, since the beginning of March. According to Dr Nasir Ali at the hospital’s paediatrics ward, eight of them have died while eight others were referred to Karachi. At least 15 of the children are currently admitted.

Thar drought: SC suggests making community service mandatory for doctors

KARACHI:

Given the absence of medical facilities and the reluctance of doctors to work in the remote areas of Sindh, the Supreme Court suggested on Thursday to make community service mandatory for a medical degree.

The apex court bench, comprising three members, said the government can make it compulsory for final-year medical students to serve in Thar and other remote areas for at least six months before they are awarded their professional degrees. The issue of the lack of medical facilities and doctors arose when a three-member bench took up the suo motu case on the recent deaths of over 100 children in Tharparkar.

Health secretary Iqbal Hussain Durrani informed the judges that he had posted 25 doctors immediately after the disaster took place. “But, only nine of them have reported because the rest of them are not willing to serve in the rural areas,” he said.

One of the bench members, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, remarked that most of the government doctors posted in Mithi are in Karachi by paying half of their salaries to the medical superintendents as bribe. The health secretary admitted that the doctors are not willing to serve outside Karachi but they’ve been issued show-cause notices. Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Jillani observed the primary healthcare system was very weak in the rural areas due to a lack of the spirit to serve the community.

Earlier, the director-general for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority told the judges that they had received a letter from the World Health Organisation, warning of a possible drought in Sindh.

Chief secretary Sajjad Saleem Hotiana replied they had taken effective measures. CJ Jillani concluded that the incompetence of officers was the main factor behind the current situation in Thar. The bench directed the chief secretary to file, within a week, a report on the causes of the drought in Thar and what measures the irrigation department would suggest in the long term.

Past 10 years ppp has been winning in Sindh lot of rigging and buying votes also people are scared through police and government departments.

In Karachi mqm always use to win since Altaf Hussain had control and they use to rigg the elections but now it’s going to be better chance to change them. Mqm is ware of time they always use to say they don’t have powers.

Best option is pti should come in power in Sindh and Karachi like other part of country so development can happen.

Pakistan needs strong government all these parties ppp, mqm, pmln, anp, jui all have been tried and tested best option is good strong government of Pakistan and the only party that can be trusted is Pti.

We have already wasted years of time and vote on ppp and mqm. Let’s try now pti for a change.
