Sales tax on pharma products brought down to 1pc

The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) on Monday sent a request to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reduce the sales tax on locally manufactured pharmaceutical products.

Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) President Qazi Mansoor Dilawar at a press conference said the 17pc sales tax had been reduced to one per cent and thanked the government for the move.

“There will be 1pc sales tax on raw material and finished products. The tax will be abolished from July 1 and companies will be able to open new letters of credit (LCs),” he said.

Earlier, speaking to the media, Minister for NHS Abdul Qadir Patel said the previous government had imposed a 17pc sales tax on the pharma products due to which production of medicines decreased and shortage of life-saving drugs was feared.

“After holding a meeting with the finance department, which was also attended by Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA), it was decided that a request will be sent to the PM to decrease the sales tax to only 1pc,” he said.

Due to 17pc sales tax imposed by PTI govt, production of medicines had decreased, says minister

The minister said the move would help a number of factories that were at the verge of closure.

“As production was decreasing, patients were left with no choice but to buy imported products at exorbitant rates,” Mr Patel said. The PPMA chairman said he was thankful to prime minister and federal ministers.

“Moreover, the government has assured us that the refund on sales tax will be released by July 15,” he said.

On June 23, the pharma industry had set the deadline of June 30 for the government to accept its three demands otherwise there would be no other option left for the cash-starved industry than to close down.

Mr Dilawar had called for the refund of Rs40 billion collected by the government as sales tax on import of raw material, withdrawal of 17pc sales tax on import of raw material and 20-25pc increase in the prices of medicines to prevent collapse of the industry.

He had said there was already shortage of some 40 medicines in the market which would assume an alarming proportion if no urgent steps were taken. He had said a promise had been made by the previous government that the sales tax imposed under the IMF pressure would be refunded within 48 hours but regretted that no mechanism had been put in place for the refund, blocking a huge amount of Rs40 billion.

What exacerbated the problem was three-time increase in the cost of raw material, manifold increase in freight charges hike in power tariff and fuel prices and devaluation of the rupee.

The PPMA president had dispelled the impression that the sector was making windfall profits and said there were many medicines the cost of which exceeded the retail price and claimed around 70pc medicines in Pakistan were cheaper compared to India and Bangladesh.

Healthy Pakistan?

Does that mean Nawaz Sharif will return to continue his treatment in Pakistan?

Or does healthy Pakistan mean everyone except Sharif Family?

The access to the medicine with reasonable prices is the responsibility of every Government. I don't see any reason for criticizing them for lifting the tax on Medicine .

I will put a bet on this news, they will take a U-turn pretty soon, if this is true. Bhikaries playing around just to suppress bad news coming up every day since Bajwa's mafia took control of the country.

I didn't criticise them for doing that, didn't even infer it.... ?

Simply asking if ex-PM now trusts "healthy Pakistan" to come back and continue his treatment at home?

What do you think? Should he come back and continue his treatment in Pakistan?

I honestly don't think price is an issue for Mian sahib ?
Lets relate this to what you have written earlier. Its funny how you are trying to spin it. NS should come to visit Pakistan because the prices of the medicines are now 15 % less ? And that , according to you, translate in to better health facilities ?

Nope, not what I was getting at ?

I was trying, and I guess failing, to point out the irony of PMLN promoting “Healthy Pakistan” (nothing wrong with that), while their own leader doesn’t trust Pakistan health system for his own treatment- despite being in a position 3 times to fix it.

But you still didn’t answer my question, do you think nawaz should come back and continue his treatment in Pakistan now?

It has been a long time since he decided to leave and left the country for better treatment . I think anyone who has a bit of grey matter and a sizeable money and can afford to treat himself/herself in foreign country would definitely do that . Its their choice to get what kind of treatment at what cost , they want to have it for themselves. It has nothing to do what better treatment , cheaper treatment . Sometimes , it is the kind of treatment which is being followed.

Now, to your 2nd question , as a leader he should come and stay in Pakistan and take part in Politics. However, we all know that fairness of judiciary and the judicial system in Pakistan . I won't sweat thinking and longing for his return under the circumstances.

Of course anyone who can afford to will get the best treatment. But often the best treatment is found in Pakistan. I know cancer patients (in my family) who went to SKMH in Lahore, and also had their case reviewed by Stanford Hospital in USA, and Stanford said, to a tee, they will not do anything different than SKMH.

I personally don't believe that Nawaz could not have got the same treatment in Pakistan. And Nawaz was not anyone, he was an EX-PM, convicted in multiple cases, who got bail and then permission to go abroad. How many other convicted criminals have got similar treatment?

The calibre and fairness of Judiciary goes both ways, whereas nawaz was convicted in 2 cases, Hudabiya was also closed on flimsy grounds, and shahbaz sharif did call Justice Quyyom regarding Benazir/Zardari cases (more irony that now they best buds). It's just not judiciary, it's also the prosecution which leave a lot to be desired. Too late in the day today but this would be a good topic to discuss....

Oh, and I've no doubt that nawaz will not return until he has in writing that he will be found innocent in all his cases.
