When youre running short on time, but still have lots of work to complete, chances are, youre going to supercharge your energy with coffee or an energy drink like Red Bull. But although this drink is approved for sale in the US, the long term effects of its use are not known. Even short term effects are not fully understood, but just one can has the potential to alter your health, albeit temporarily. There are plenty of rumors and accusations swirling around against Red Bull even those so extreme they claim the active ingredient in Red Bull is a Vietnam-era Department of Defense chemical. Of course, not everything is true, but much of Red Bulls bad rap does stem from actual events, research, and even deaths. Read on to find out 10 things you should know before you pick up your next can of Red Bull.

  • [h=3]Red Bull may have triggered a fatal heart condition[/h]After drinking four cans of Red Bull and various other caffeinated drinks, 21-year-old student Chloe Leach fell to the floor in a nightclub and died at the scene. She died of a rare heart condition, which may have been triggered by the excessive amount of caffeine she consumed. She had no illegal drugs in her system, and according to her mom, was typically careful in her caffeine consumption, only drinking Red Bull occasionally. This rare case is not likely to happen to most college students, but it does serve as a cautionary tale not to drink an excessive amount of energy drinks. It was unknown at the time of her death that a large amount of caffeine could trigger her heart condition.
  • [h=3]Red Bull Cola once contained cocaine[/h]In April and June 2009, batches of Red Bull Cola were found to contain cocaine, sparking bans from Taiwan and most states in Germany. However, this scary fact is made less scary when you note that it was between 0.1-0.3 micrograms per litre. Even with a low tolerance per can, a person would have to consume 2 million cans at once before becoming seriously ill from cocaine in the drink. Red Bull uses the extract of coca leaves for flavoring, but insists that theyre only used after removing the cocaine alkaloid, which, according to Bolivian coca growers, is completely unnecessary for safety. Some may recall that Coca-Colas original formula included coca leaves.
  • [h=3]Red Bull contains lots of sodium[/h]Most people realize that Red Bull has lots of harmful sugars. But sodium may not be as obvious, and although theres a sugar-free Red Bull option, theres not yet one with a low sodium option. In one small can, Red Bull packs 9% of your sodium for the day. Have more than one, and youre nearing 20%. Although sodium is good for those working out, students downing Red Bulls to power through late nights probably arent sweating enough to need sodium replacement from a drink. The CDC reports that 90% of the people in the US get too much sodium, raising our risk of high blood pressure, and in turn, our risk for heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.
  • [h=3]Mixing Red Bull with alcohol can be dangerous and deadly[/h]Red Bull cocktails can lead to impulsive, risky behavior, according to a study at Northern Kentucky University. Those who mix alcohol and Red Bull may feel more awake and alert, not really aware of their level of intoxication. You may drink more than you normally would, and make poor decisions as a result. A pre-mixed alcoholic energy drink, Four Loko, was banned after several hospitalizations and even college student deaths of those who drank the concoction to become "wide awake drunk."
  • [h=3]Red Bull raises your risk for heart attack and stroke[/h]After drinking just one can of Red Bull, your risk for heart attack or stroke rises, even in young people. An Australian study found that Red Bull makes blood "sticky," with abnormal blood systems similar to patients with cardiovascular disease. Researchers caution against drinking Red Bull for those that may be suffering from stress or high blood pressure. Researcher Scott Willoughby recommends, "if you have any predisposition to cardiovascular disease, Id think twice about drinking it."


  • [h=3]Red Bull has been linked to kidney failure[/h]In Sweden, Red Bull was investigated in the deaths of three young people believed to have consumed the drink. Two of them used Red Bull as a mixer, which is commonly believed to be dangerous, but one of them drank several Red Bulls after a hard workout and died of kidney failure. This prompted officials in Greece to recommend that the drink not be consumed after strenuous exercise, and France, Denmark, and Norway only allow Red Bull to be sold in pharmacies. Although there is no conclusive evidence, scientists do have their suspicions that Red Bull in large amounts can harm your kidneys, and clearly, officials have acted to reduce the risk if it is in fact true.
  • [h=3]Red Bull can slow water absorption[/h]Although Red Bull "vitalizes body and mind," its not good for exercise, and can keep you from absorbing water due to high levels of caffeine and sugar. Most people already dont get enough water, especially while consuming Red Bull and other types of drinks. Drinking a Red Bull instead of water could further exacerbate a water deficiency. Red Bulls representative Kim Peterson shares that the drink is definitely "not a thirst quencher or fluid replenishment drink." So if youre going to drink Red Bull, be sure to keep an eye on your water intake as well.
  • [h=3]Red Bull can cause behavior problems[/h]A Catholic high school in Britain had to ban Red Bull after several students exhibited changed behavior, and not for the better. Students became hyperactive, noisier, stopped responding to instructions, and began arriving to school later than they should. Although college students may be responsible enough to avoid such negative actions after drinking Red Bull, theres no guarantee the drink wont make you more impetuous and irresponsible.
  • [h=3]Drinking too much Red Bull can make your heart stop[/h]After drinking a large amount of Red Bull (approximately eight cans in five hours) a motocross competitor, Matthew Penbross, collapsed in 2007. His heart had stopped, and he needed defibrillation to be revived. At 28 years old and in "peak condition," his only other risk factor for a heart attack was smoking. He regularly drank four Red Bulls each day instead of eating, although labels warn against drinking more than two cans a day. The cardiologist who treated Penbross believes that "excessive consumption of energy drinks had precipitated the heart attack." Excessive consumption of Red Bull certainly seems to be dangerous, and should be avoided even on an occasional basis.
  • [h=3]Caffeine intoxication can happen, and its scary[/h]Red Bull packs a serious punch of caffeine, and too much can cause serious health problems. There is such a thing as caffeine intoxication, which can include tremors, anxiety, restlessness, rapid heartbeats, and sometimes even death. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University believe that Red Bull and other high-caffeine energy drinks should carry warning labels to alert users to their levels of caffeine content.

  1. More than 4 cups of coffee linked to early death. A Mayo Clinic partnered study found that men who drank more than four 8 fl.oz. cups of coffee had a 21% increase in all-cause mortality. However, those that reported that they consumed excessive amounts of caffeine were also likely to smoke and have poor fitness. Dr. Nancy Snyderman from NBC said there were a few discrepancies with the study, but stresses that moderation is still key. See Her Interview Here.
  2. Caffeine consumption may raise blood pressure in those already suffering from hypertension. People with hypertension were given 250mg of caffeine (about 2 coffees) and the data revealed that their blood pressure was elevated for about 2-3 hours after the caffeine. Src.
  3. Caffeine linked to gout attacks. This study showed that people who binge on caffeinated beverages increase their risk for a gout flare-up. Src.
  4. Caffeine could cause incontinence. A study out of the University of Alabama showed that women who consume a lot of caffeine are 70% more likely to develop incontinence. Src.
  5. Caffeine may cause insomnia. Caffeine in a persons system at bedtime can mimic the symptoms of insomnia. Src.
  6. Caffeine can cause indigestion. People who consume caffeinated beverages often report an upset stomach or indigestion. This mainly occurs when the beverages are consumed on an empty stomach. Src.
  7. Caffeine can cause headaches. While occasional doses of caffeine can relieve headache symptoms, the overuse of caffeine can cause headaches and lead to migraines. Src.
  8. Caffeine could reduce fertility in women. A study from The University of Nevada School of Medicine showed that caffeine can reduce a womans chances of becoming pregnant by about 27%.Src.
  9. Caffeine may not be healthy for type 2 diabetics. A study conducted by the American Diabetes Association showed that caffeine impaired glucose metabolism in those with type 2 diabetes. Src.
  10. Caffeine Overdose. While overdose is rare, it can lead to many adverse symptoms including death, especially in those with underlying medical conditions. Some have a lower tolerance for caffeine than others. Src.
  11. Caffeine Allergies. Some people have over-sensitivity to the caffeine molecule, which causes allergic-like reactions in the body such as hives and pain. Although not a true allergy, many report very negative symptoms after consuming even the smallest amounts. Src.
  12. Caffeine causes more forceful heart contractions. A recent study showed that immediately after energy drink consumption the heart produced more forceful contractions. It is unclear if this has any long-term health implications except for those with known health conditions. Src.
  13. Worse Menopause Symptoms. A recent study published in The Journal of The North American Menopause Society showed that menopausal women who consumed caffeine had a greater degree of vasomotor symptoms. Src.
[h=3]Other Claims Against Caffeine[/h]You may have heard or read about other negative health effects from caffeine consumption, but as of now, there just isnt enough evidence to fully endorse those as legitimate health concerns. Some of those negatives include:

  • Adrenal fatigue

Caffeine is a drug and can affect people differently just like any other substance. Its important that consumers understand how caffeine interacts with their bodies in regards to their personal health histories.
The food and beverage industry spends millions, if not billions, of dollars world-wide to fund studies and promote caffeinated products as safe or even healthy.
Fortunately, caffeine is one of the most researched substances on the planet and there does exist some unbiased data in which to glean some reliable information from.
While much of the research published does allude to the safety and even potential benefits of caffeine (in moderation), there are a handful of research studies that highlight the potential harmful effects of caffeine.

موسم سرما میں ہمارے ہاں مغزیات کا بہت استعمال ہوتا ہے۔ مغزیات قوت بخش غذا کے طور پر استعمال کئے جاتے ہیں۔ مغزیات بیج ہیں جن سے درخت جنم لیتے ہیں۔
مغزیات کا استعمال نامعلوم تاریخ سے ہے بلکہ اندازہ ہوتا ہے کہ انسان زندگی کے ابتدائی دور میں مغزیات کا استعمال بطور غذا کرتا تھا پھر ان کا استعمال کم ہونے لگا۔ اب تحقیقات جدید کی روشنی میں پھر مغزیات کا استعمال بڑھنے لگا ہے۔ مغزیات میں اخروٹ ناریل مونگ پھلی کاجو پستہ وغیرہ شامل ہیں۔ بعض مغزیات میں طاقت بخش اجزا بہت مقدار میں ہوتے ہیں، ایک تحقیق کے مطابق 15 تا 20 فیصد پروٹین 50 تا 60 فیصد روغن، 9 تا12 فیصد کاربوہائیڈریٹ، 3 تا 5 فیصد کیلوریز اور کئی دوسری معدنیات ایک فیصد ہوتی ہیں۔
معدنی اجزاء میں پوٹاشیم، صحت بخش سوڈیم، جوانی برقرار رکھنے والے کیلشیم اور گندھک کے اجزاء ہوتے ہیں۔ ایک اندازے کے مطابق سو گرام مغزیات کے استعمال سے چھ سو حرارے (کیلوریز) پیدا ہوتے ہیں۔ اسی مقدار میں گندم استعمال کیا جائے تو تین سو اٹھارہ حرارے پیدا ہوتے ہیں اور سو گرام کھجوروں میں 283 حرارے پیدا ہوتے ہیں۔ سبزیوں کے مد مقابل مغزیات میں زیادہ روغن ہوتا ہے اور ان میں مجموعی وزن کا نصف تیل پیدا ہوتا ہے۔
روغن پیدا کرنے کی خاصیت کے سبب ہی اس میں توانائی پیدا کرنے کی صلاحیت زیادہ ہوتی ہے۔ جس قدر پروٹین (لحمی اجزاء) مغزیات کے اندر ہوتے ہیں اس قدر سبزی میں نہیں ہوتے۔ قدرتی طریقہ علاج کے عالمی ماہر ڈاکٹر کیلوگ کا کہنا ہے کہ تمام نباتاتی خوراک میں سب سے عمدہ پروٹین مغز کے اندر ہوتی ہے، یہ حیوانات کے گوشت سے بھی زیادہ طاقت بخش ہے۔

مغز کو اس کی طبعی حالت میں ہی استعمال کرنا چاہیے۔ خام مغز کی بھیگی ہوئی چکنائی جسم کے لئے بہت فائدہ مند ہے، اس سے دل اور اس کی شریانوں کا اندرونی چھلکا سخت ہوتا ہے جو جراثیم کو روکنے کے لئے مؤثر ہوتا ہے۔ مغز کو اس کی افادیت اور خصوصیات کے ساتھ طویل عرصے تک محفوظ رکھا جا سکتا ہے۔ مغز کو آسانی سے ہضم کرنے کے لئے ایک طریقہ یہ ہے کہ اسے خوب چبا کر استعمال کریں۔
