Lockdowns not enough to defeat coronavirus: WHO expert

Countries can’t simply lock down their societies to defeat coronavirus, the World Health Organization’s top emergency expert said on Sunday, adding that public health measures are needed to avoid a resurgence of the virus later on.

“What we really need to focus on is finding those who are sick, those who have the virus, and isolate them, find their contacts and isolate them,” Mike Ryan said in an interview on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.

“The danger right now with the lockdowns … if we don’t put in place the strong public health measures now, when those movement restrictions and lockdowns are lifted, the danger is the disease will jump back up.”

Mike Ryan lockdown coronavirus WHO

Much of Europe and the United States have followed China and other Asian countries and introduced drastic restrictions to fight the new coronavirus, with most workers told to work from home and schools, bars, pubs and restaurants being closed.

Ryan said that the examples of China, Singapore and South Korea, which coupled restrictions with rigorous measures to test every possible suspect, provided a model for Europe, which the WHO has said has replaced Asia as the epicenter of the pandemic.

“Once we’ve suppressed the transmission, we have to go after the virus. We have to take the fight to the virus,” Ryan said.

Italy is now the worst hit country in the world by the virus, and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that Britain’s health system could be overwhelmed unless people avoid social interactions. British housing minister Robert Jenrick said that production of tests would double next week and ramp up thereafter.

Ryan also said that several vaccines were in development, but only one had begun trials in the United States. Asked how long it would take before there was a vaccine available in Britain, he said that people needed to be realistic.

“We have to make sure that it’s absolutely safe… we are talking at least a year,” he said.

“The vaccines will come, but we need to get out and do what we need to do now.”

These are the words. First world countries are struggling to maintain lock down. Wuhan had a lock down of 2 months.

I am unable to understand how Pakistan will achieve lock down unless the cooperation from masses. People in Wuhan cooperated with their Government. Even we dont really seen some sort of brutal force for lock down. This is where education matters. We are simply graduated illiterate. This is impossible to achieve lock down in Pakistan. Karachi lock down will prove my words, because masses are not cooperating at all. They are not taking this serious.

People are still gathering on ration points and having gup shup. Some NGOs are working to deliver food at home to poor, now everyone will act as razakar and this will lead to no lock down at all. Media is still arranging shows with public gatherings. Police personal are out and meeting, staying close with each other.
I don't know how this will be enforced.

Only solution to this pandemic is 99% self-quarantine and find virus traces.

Lock down for 2 weeks will help us buy the time there is strong evidence that this virus slows down in summer and humidity. South east asian countries are not seeing enough cases of covid because temperature is high there. We must put a lock down it will slow down the infection rate and keep it in the limit where health system can tackle it and summers will be here in 2 weeks

The dangers of acting like a know it all. You did not even understand what WHO is trying to say.

What WHO is warning about is the 2nd wave of the virus after the lockdown is lifted. Lockdown alone is not a solution, WHO is saying that countries need to take measures to test everyone along with the lockdown.

۔ ۔ ۔ ۔ ۔ and you will then go again into the Lock Down, RIGHT ???

Thats fine. you can criticize previous gov for all that.

the fact is that there is no cure or vaccine. Hospitals can only help you that much in this scenario. Best thing is to lockdown, self isolate and try to slow the spread.

If you have to keep going in lockdown so be it. the only way to slow it down is to test as much as we can.

Is there anywhere we can find data on how much testing is done on a daily basis in pakistan?

apna mashwara apni wahan pe daal lo. laato ke bhoot baato se nai maantay

In Italy they defied the lockdown, result is in front of every one

in China and SK, they forced lockdown and they controlled it. Now it gives them tiem to prepare for the 2nd wave if any.

Do as u like. Natural selection at work.
